a few weeks back I won an e-bay auction for a gsx600f on a 1988 f plate. it was a non runner and needed some work as stated in the add. 10 mins in the garage saw it running. rough but running. will need the carbs cleaning. and it also needed a load of other bits looking at.
so far I have stripped both the front and rear brakes, calipers and master cylinder. rebuilt all with rebuild kits. removed the rear disk to clean it up, and gave it a lick of paint aswell. upon removing the rear wheel to get at the disk. I found about 20 years worth of shite built up around the rear shock absorber. the rear wheel hub and anywhere the shite got flung up off the rear wheel and chain.
so over last few days I have wrestled with the nuts and bolts to get all the suspension bits off, and tonight I have them all sat on the side ready for a trip through the parts washer.
only rear hic-ups so far have been a few of the nuts and bolts rounding off so they are not reusable, and one set of needle roller bearings in the rear dog bone, if that's what its called, falling apart.
will post pics later when photobucket stops being an arse.
the bike cost me £370 and the brake parts have cost £100, so total running cost £470.
now the dilemma. I originally got the bike as a bike bit of a fix and sell job but now I think there will be no profit left in it. so do I do it cheaply, clean and fix what needs to be done to mot it and sell it and get what I can for it, or do it smart, repaint or polish or replace everything, a strip and restore kind of deal and go for top money, or do keep it work on it and chop it using a hard up choppers frame.
what do people think??

ok so as promised some pics.
firstly I stripped the calipers and cleaned and rebuilt them.
to do so I firstly split the calipers and acquired the necessary seals for them
then cleaned the caliper and piston.
fitted the new seals and new nipples..
then refitted to the bike, I then did the same with the master cylinder and then bled up the rear system, before repeating on the front system.

next up was the cruddy and stiff as a hard tail rear suspension.. removed the rear wheel and the swing arm and this is the mess I had.. so I set about the bits with the wire brush in the drill... once I had clean the shite of the swing arm I found one side had had the weld sanded back but not the other, so that was next. next up was the suspension links.. the pic show one cleaned and one not. and a shot of the underside of the rear of the bike.. and as I was removing the dog bone I found that the middle bush/ spacer was solid. so I gave it a dose of wd40 and started to wiggle it. it came free but half the needle bearings came with it. the cage has rotted away.. so will need to replace that. found a set for £40 the others in the rear end aint the best so that's another £75 and the rear shock aint the best so could probably do with replacing. the ones I have found are stupid money..£350 plus. also found the link section that connects the down pipes to the end can is rotted, so that's another chunk of money.. but today spoke to the guys at hard up choppers and for £600 I can have a new frame delicvered to my door...

judging by those pics, you've been ripped off. But with some elbow grease it can turn into something nice.

but if yo break it down like this
engine. £150 wheels £30 each so £60 wiring loom £40 fairings £75 frame and log book £100 calipers £25 x 3 so £75 plus all the other bits... like tank seat caliper hangers, ect ect
£495++
but all along I knew if it was not save-able it would be a breaker or chop-able... have been selling up to get money for a vn1500 but I may just spend the money on this now..

have been working on the bike for a few hours over last couple of days. have stripped all the plastics off it and have started to strip and clean around the engine. I removed the sprocket cover and was greeted with this mess... and have spent about three hours trying to get the 4-1 link pipe off with out cutting the bugger to bits, but its rotted and the rust is holding it in and I had to resort to the grinder. so tomorrow I will finish it off.

Loving the pictures. I'm fan of restoration to original......... however, I'm not sure an 88 600 is worth anything to anyone? That said, if it was me, I'd do it for the pleasure of it. A well rebuilt bike has got to be worth 1 - 1.5k of someones money I'd have thought?

Is this a motorcycle or an archeological dig? o0 Some work cut out there.
Imagine it a fun little runner when finished though.

If I have stubborn exhaust bolts I normally use a set of Irwin nut remover set they grip the outside and are good for Allen key heads

This might go against the grain . . . But it's often worth spending a little more to save money in the long run . . . Yup sound just like me dad , so I'll go and find some gardening to do instead
