Maybe a daft question but can you use a car battery to jump start a bike or would it damage the electrics?

yes you can use a car battery. If it's in a car don't start the car engine, because the charging system's current will kill the electrics.

If it's an old bike, yes. If it's a fancy new bike, then jump starting can easily fry the ecu.

Its a 1984 GSX1100 EF - the car battery I have is a spare so not in the car.

As CC said, if the car is not running, is no problem, no matter what year the bike is
