Going from reading Dale Walkers site by swapping in just the gsxr intake cam on a bandit 12 you can pick up 4-7 bhp without sacrificing the midrange , any one done this ? I've got a set of 1100k cams but really am aiming for a lot of torque as opposed to top end power. When the motors built it'll be 1216, flowed head with rs38's on open filters it's just the cam combination that's in question now . Either stick with the bandit cams, gsxr intake and bandit exhaust cam or both gsxr cams ?

From partly what I've done and all the information I have : The GSXR1100 engine, especially 2nd gen, responds really well to a big bore - 1186 or 1216cc, raised compression and if possible a bit of careful porting in the port bowl area - this will help it rev well. A well set-up version of the above will produce as much(at least as much) torque right at the bottom of the rev range as a Bandit, but with far more in the mid-range/top-end (4-10,500rpm), it would feel 'lusty', not too revvy. If you keep the airbox you get a really nice delivery, fit a free flowing drop in filter and jet. The Pipercross filter is amazingly free flowing (I needed stage 3 jet kit), K and N's are pretty good. You'll need a good exhaust system, an ignition advancer is helpful and decent coils for a strong spark. The output should be 140-150ish hp with high 80s - low 90s lb/ft torque, with masses in the frequently used 4 - 7k revs area - the extra torque will be felt from idle up. You could do the same to the Bandit engine and fit 1100 cams - but the std airbox doesn't seem to flow as well as a GSXR (2nd gen) one - Dale Walker drills holes in his I believe.

Pretty much concur with that appraisal - my 1186 with stock head & cams, st3 36mm CV's made 144hp and 91 ftlbs. Only thing i'd disagree with, is the Ignition advancer - with the better cylinder efficiency / filling mine pinked under load with a std rotor and CDI so swopped out to a Dyna 2K and never a problem again.

You're right about the pre-detonation problem Katana, something I forgot, especially with raised compression, advancers are very decent with standard compression, gives better response - can knock off a small bit of top-end. Better with the programmable ignition like you say, where some advance in certain areas is good and lessened else where etc, a fixed advance has it's limitations - comes down to money really, how much you want to spend on kit and set-up. Get a big bore and let it breathe and you'll be happy - torque everywhere, more satisfying than screaming top-end. Torque is great on the road, you can use it so often - 90 lb/ft + is a lot of thrust ! Does anyone else have some input ? - what you've done that you're very pleased with - it's a good topic !
