it works on mine, for seven years already. Just be careful when tightening the thing.

I bought this amazing weld rod at the Newark show. ...stuff from Sweden. Heat it up, drip it into the hole, screw the bolt in and it dries as a solid ally thread...unreal weld

Fbob I read it that its one of the oil line theads he's stripped. DOH!!!! Helicoil it is then! Tip - anything in ali that needs tightening - hold spanner / wrench at the head nearest the nut / fixing and only twist what your wrist will allow, then if it needs a torque wrench, use it. Your wrist will cry enough before any thread!

Thanks for the tips guys, I was reusing the copper washers and thought another 1/8 turn would stop the leaking, and another. I was very wrong. I should have known better.

A worth insert or timesert would be better than a helicoil for this as there is no chance of screwing it into the sump when you get heavy handed again

Never come across a Timesert that big - M16 or thereabouts? How much metal would be left to hold the 'sert?

Some drillings are bottomed some not & even with a blind hole there is the oilway drilling at the side, I have seen helicoils wound into these a few times, typically a worth is only a little over a mm bigger than the hole you open out for a helicoil & there was enough material there on the couple ive done but its a good point & well worth checking what material is left first

Time-serts are really excellent but to find size you want going to be ridiculous expensive unless you can find engineering shop with some. Your probably end up helicoiling as long as stated above you have enough material to cut into and not leaving outside diameter or housing too week. (cant picture your application at moment) Depending on size of what you have available there is also the option of making your own threaded top hat bush. What ever way remember you going to get aluminum swarf in main oil way that has to be removed.
