Hi Guys Decided its time to get my b12 back on the road. This means I need to remove the engine as its F****D. I have been collecting bits and pieces over the years to get it running, along with tips and ideas. So yesterday I made a start , I removed the tank and side panels as they will need some repair, and so as not to make them any worse while working on the bike. My first problem is the exhaust Allen head bolts will not budge. Don't want to snap the heads off and have to drill the bolts out as I have had to do in the past and managed to damage the thread. Sprayed them up with wd40 hoping it would penetrate into the thread and help release the bolts, but no chance.
So this is a call out to all of you who have had the same problem HOW did you manage to remove stubborn exhaust bolts? all suggestions gratefully received
Thank you

Weld a bolt on or use Irwin bolt removers they grip the outside edge work every time

I used plenty of Plus Gas. Managed to undo 7 of 8 and last one managed with mole grips. Think I was lucky though.

And when you do get them out....including the broken one/s.......replace with stainless studs and brass or copper nuts so its never a problem in the future

Thanx for suggestions. Been out in the cold garage since posting, TRYING to undo the bolts but no luck. Not much room to use mole grips cant get into the bolts around the frame. the outer ones just slip off Will get some plus gas during the week and give that a go. Thinking about heating the bolts up with blow torch. any ideas?
Thanx

Weld a bolt head on the cap head they will come out then because the weld will provide the heat and the hex head will provide the torque to get it out

Mate of mine did exactly that and it worked a treat!, he had 3 that had sheared off with only enough on to weld a nut on

A bit of gentle heat around the bolt, not the bolt that will make it worse. A common problem sadly, patience and keep trying, rushing it will end in tears.
Good luck.

as your engine is " feked" snap the buggers off and remove the engine, if you need to reuse the head then you can drill them out easily once the head is off

You don't need the Irwin type remover, a 12mm multipoint socket is the right size to hammer over and grip the sides of the M8 allen head, stick a ratchet on it and unscrew. Soak with Plusgas not WD40 first and a bit of heat helps as well. If its going to come out without snapping this is the way to go, if it snaps it would have done whatever other way you try then it's FB's plan B and drill it/them out, easy enough with the motor being out.

My bolts were stuck too.. I used a long breaker bar with lot of momentum and squeezed them carefully. They all came out, but I think I was lucky If some of them brake off but you still have some of the bolt sticking out, the best first thing to try is welding on a nut..
