Bit of a head scratch for me this...
my slab 750 engine is in need of a valve service and a bit of a refresh maybe with uprated cams etc..trouble is the engine has to come out in order to get the cover off as its fitted in a later chassis and there isn't room to wiggle it clear (I've tried) I've never dropped an engine out and tbh don't feel confident doing it so would take it to my local bike shop who have quoted around £400 to do the work (barring any problems)
My dilemma is would it be more cost effective in the long run to just fit a different engine or keep the current one:-/
Any advice or opinions would be appreciated

don't take it to a bike shop. Ask on here, promise some beer/porkpies/whatever and I'm sure some people will come around and help you.

You may as well chuck an 11/12 motor in if you're taking the old one out. Not quite a straightforward job though is it ? I agree with CC, don't ask a shop to do it, unless it's one you trust 100%. Even then, I'd be a bit sceptical with a job like that.

Same as the above. Get a manual and do the job yourself. Even if you just strip it and send the relevant bits off that you can't do, it will work out far cheaper and you'll learn how to do it. When you get past the fear, engines are just a collection of bits that fit together in a particular order. If you go the replacement engine route, who's to say it will be any better than the one you take out ?

too be honest mate its not that bad, around three years ago i had the output shaft seal go on my 1987 gsxr 750 slabside and i,d never dropped an engine out before but took the bull by the horns and did it myself, i stuck masking tape on all plugs and leads and labelled where everything was attached too, went a lot better than i thought, only bit i had help with was splitting the crankcases and fitting the new seal by removing gears and then put it all back in the bike myself and started straight away, so really not that bad, just take your time and label everything as you go, it,ll save you a fortune fella

If you can't get the 750 cam cover off insitu then the taller 1100/1200 will be a bitch of the first order! With a removable bottom frame rail these motors virtually fall out of the frame and they ain't that heavy - try a full AC motor without the removable sections - that's a job and a half!

You did try to take the cover of without the breather section ...yes.
You are the only one who can determine your capabilities.
Reasonable thinking, a manual and maybe some help.
Compared to other engines a bit light but approx 70 kg is still heavy.
On thet other hand you dont want to know how many had their bikes in parts ......because she run out of gas(rear story client)

£400 to pull a motor & do basic work FFS I'm living in the wrong town if people are paying that that was an estimate:-/ If it was a main dealership quote it would be much higher...they charge around £50 per hour plus vat for labour alone:-/

The annoying thing is, if the motor was out I would be happy to do the valves etc myself....its just the removal and refitting of it thats got me biting my fingers:-/
