I am trying to find a reasonable setting. Started with a Tovamikit, as described in the manual i did the 118 sprinkler, but that was to poor, put the 135, that was a lot better, and the needle on 3th step. That was ok when accelerating, but cruising caused a little prrrt, if you know what i mean. Air/fuel srews where 3,5 out. Now i changed the needle to first step, not good either, the engine dying when accelerating, so tomorrow i will put them in second. Tips are welcome

Errrmm.. What carbs are we talking about here? Stock BS34SS carbs? And what air filters have you fitted to them?
Btw.. pilot jets and pilot screw settings control the mixture during "cruise".. Also the float levels play a role in this, but apart from checking their height is set to the spec according to the manual I wouldn't alter it unless other adjustments aren't effective..

3.5 mix screws is too much, what carbs, open filters, you mean k&n-ish filters or velocity stacks?

i have the stock ones, btw are there any better (except the very expensive ones) f.e. from another motorcycle? I have these filters, Yesterday i did some adjustments, the needle on 2nd step, and mix screws on 3 it's a bit better now, but still cruising is not what it supposed to be, i am aware of the float levels, but like you've said that will be my last step.

Carbs can be a nightmare mate , had 34 tin tops on me 11 kat . . . 140 mains , 4 clips down Upgraded to 36 mm with stage 3 , which is massive increase but check emulsion tubes , had to change mine. Struggling with 12 bandit at moment , gone from 2 clips down to 4 back to 3 and going to 2 again after found floats were miles out .

Well.. It says 3 1/2 t.o. with the pilot screws in the service manual.. A slight adjustment might be needed with pod filters, but not so much that it would explain the bad cruise.. (unless the spec in the manual is wrong?) So.. Checking those float heights might be a wise thing to do first before altering any other settings..
As for "better" carbs, GSX-R/B12 36mm or Powerscreen 34mm are often picked carbs as these (BST type) are a next generation to the BS34ss carbs on the ET/EX.. They do need setting up of course, and -as was mentioned- the emulsion tubes are often worn out..
Btw, ditching the filter box saves you a lot of time with working on the carbs, and I use filter pods myself too, but I'm not a fan of those cheap small Emgo(?) cone type pods.. (if they're new I guess they do work, but if they're older or of unknown origin perhaps they might be clogged up..)

Thank you guys for the advise, and indeed Arnout 3.5 out is what the manual says, I will let you guys know what the solution was once i've found out the problem.

Back in the day we all used to use Ledar air corrector jet kits which involved tapping 1 of the air bleed holes in the back of the carb & screwing in a smaller brass air jet. Used to work well. The EBC distributor in UK used to sell them. I see they still make jets so maybe they may be able to help. Nick

Today i went to a test bench, but the man told me it would be a waist of time and my money with these filters, told me to buy k&n or simular. Does anyone have velocity stacks? I like the looks of it, but guess with a small rain the engine will kill. Anyone has them?

So, i forgot to mention the solution, the man i went was wrong, i called the supplier where i've bought the kit, he told me to go smaller! Like 10 or so, bought 127.5, and it was spot on!!!! Burning rubber!!! Happy man here But now.....i've bought another one, a gsx1100 es 1983, and i would like to remove the box too, so i have a question. Is it possible to only remove the box of the airfilter and mount one big filter instead, has anyone tried this before?

Tried and tested route for older cv carbs is individual pods so you could get one big filter to work why bother ? Try some 34 mm tin tops off gsxr 11 or power screen 11 , these run fine with individual pods or even better bst 36 mm off bandit or gsxr 11 with dual pods

Guess i have to order pods again....
