Blimey...well I've just placed an order at Robinsons for a new set of gaskets just in case the old one was pinched/damaged
must say, even tho I couldn't get the rocker cover off fully, what I could see underneath seemed nice and clean and good condition

Silicone sealer can squeeze out from the mating surface if anything more than the merest smear is used. It then gets carried around with the oil. If you are lucky it gets to the sump wher the strainer or filter should catch it. If you are unlucky it can block an oilway on the way around. Think blood clot.

Once saw an entire Allegro engine build using silicone sealant (not a single gasket used!). Amazingly the car didn't get past 100 miles before being towed away, never was told the official reason why though
