Im about to buy a 1991 dr 350 s for a very good price, but it has a problem with starting and idling when the engine gets hot. The seller has changed the ignition coil, new gaskets in the carb, and he tells me he thinks it's the cdi unit..
Besides that the engine runs really good and has 43000 km on it..
Any suggestions on what could be the case of this problem..?

Hmm.. Sounds to me like the idle mixture might be too rich.. Does the DR need any choke on a cold start? Check the pilot screw setting.. (Also check if the air filter is clogged up and other basic checks, spark plug, charging voltage, battery condition, ign. timing, etc..) If the pilot screw setting is acc. to spec. and there are no indicators it is running too rich, and other checks do not show anything wrong, perhaps the ignition coil is faulty.. Only way to check that is swapping it for another another (pref. new) one.. Yes, you state the seller has already replaced the coil, but has he really?

Could it be valve clearances getting tight when hot

thanks for replies, well I bought the bike, got it home and next day I tried kicking it. Wouldn't start so I checked to see if I had a spark, but no spark at all.. Spent a day measuring out the wiring harness and stator rotor etc, and didn't get any wiser.. Then today it had a very small spark between the plug threads and the frame, but not at the electrode. stuck a screwdriver up the cap, and it suddenly had lots of spark, and then realised it was the spark plug gap that was too big! now it had normal spark and managed to push start it with a helping hand, and it started easily by kicking it once it was turned off..
Oh and btw. the spark plug wasn't the right one, the correct one is DPR9EA, and the one it had was a DPR7EA,
That should explain why he couldn't start it once it got hot..?

Im not sure im gonna keep this one, it's looking pretty rough and part of the subframe has totally rotted away.. Might gonna be spending too much money on it.. But the plan now is to buy a "one day license plate", and see how the engine is behaving..
I'll post some pics of the beast tomorrow
