Hi folks, new member, first thread. The speedo on my Katana is reading high. At 30mph it shows about 40 and at 70 it shows about 100. The mileometer is reading proportionally high too. Any idea what is going on. Cheers. Mick.

KPH clocks? 62mph is 100kph so close to yours with tolerances! Try a speedo healer.

Definately a uk spec mph model. I've had it for 31 years. Not had a problem untill this summer when I guessed that it was wrong as I was seeing speeds on the clock that were unrealistic. What or who is a speedo healer?

Has anything else changed ? have you perhaps fitted a smaller front wheel ? or even replaced the mechanical drive unit on the front wheel ?

No nothing replaced at all. I have checked the cable connections and all seems to be ok. The current cable has been on for probably 10yrs, and the tyre and wheel are original and standard.

Is the speedo drive unit well lubed? ...
Maybe the gears have worn to the point that they're not meshing together corrrectly and periodically slipping?

That's the strange thing in this case - that'd make me expect lower reading rather than higher... I thought that too but as part of the fault findin' process, still worth a look. 10 years does seem like a very long life-time for a cable of any kind, I would want to pull the inner out just make sure it's as it should be. Speedo drive units are so basic that they rarely give any trouble... so, if the drive and the cable are ok, it's gonna be an internal issue. Isn't there a magnet of some kind used to operate the needle pointer inside a mechanical speedo, wonder if it's become de-magnetised at all?
