Yesterday we went to an oldskool mechanic friend, showed him the piston, and he also said "detonation". After some more investigation the no.3 piston appeared to be cracked all around, it could have broke in bits at any time.
Harry as you might know the Busa pistons will lower the compression considerably. That's why (and they are forged, not cast) all the turbo boys use them in oilcooled motors.
Ground plate is already slotted, ignition is now 3 degrees retarded.
Another friend of ours dragraces an old Audi 90 (2,2l 5 cil. turbo, 350kW) and also said the cracks in the head are common and no problem.

I know about the busa pistons but they dont solve the problem u have (there is a problem if you break pistons whit only 7.5 psi boost) Dont forget to sand the sharp edges if u going for the busa pistons (less hot spots so less change of pinging)

the A/F ratio is ok as the dyno printout showed. It was pinging now because of the stock compression. With the Busa pistons it will be low enough for more boost.

And whit more boost the pinging starts again ...but as always..........most of the time i am wrong

And whit more boost the pinging starts again ... That's the main reason why we're rebuilding the bike now with better components (adjustable ignition, lower compression, possibly different carbs, redesigned plenum, etc.). Version 1 was just to see if and how it works and now the improvements can begin.

My guess is that you going for a dyna (tek) 2000 for the ignition My thoughts are that for the same money you can by a microsquirt that can do the same thing and much more So maybe FI is something to think about www.diyautotune.com/catalog/microsquirt-c-35.html

So maybe FI is something to think about It certainly is. But it's not my bike, the decision is not mine.

CC, did you and your mate ever get this sorted?

I have rebuilt the engine with Busa pistons, and after some adjusting of the fuel pressure and stuff it now runs very well.
But still we want to go EFI at some point.
The plenum needs to be re-designed because cilinder no.3 gets more airflow than the others. So it also runs a bit leaner, which has now been solved by raising the needle in that carb slightly. I told my mate that's not a good solution but he did it anyway (just temporarily).
