Yesterday I picked up my new bike, something to keep me out of trouble over the winter
1977 Suzuki GS750. Non runner, US import not registered in the UK
I always liked the GS but never actually got one when they were widely available. This one was on ebay and I stuck a bid on it with 5 seconds to go and won it. It's a bit scruffy but in decent enough condition at first glance, especially given Suzuki's reputation for poor finish. Chrome is worse for wear but the alloy is ok for a 36 year old bike.
When I bought it the plan was to build a cafe racer (another long held ambition) but I'm wondering whether to rebuild it as a standard bike with sensible upgrades. 35mm forks, single front disc and a skinny swing arm don't exactly inspire confidence, even though they were thought to handle well at the time. Maybe some 41mm forks from a GSXR, along with the twin discs and four pot pistons, and a beefier swing arm but retaining twin shocks.
Anyway, I've started to strip it down, I think the battery might need replacing. Tool pouch was empty btw.
Front brake caliper looks as if it's been overhauled recently, even has new rubber hoses. Single disc, single piston
Carbs were a bit gummed up. That's not liquid in the middle two carbs, it's solid. The slides were stuck fast too, I'll need to buy some carb cleaner.
A couple of hours work and it looks like this, I've taken plenty of pictures so I should be able to put it all back where it came from.
Next job is to remove the engine but that will have to wait until next weekend.
