Hard to believe its been nearly two months since I updated this thread!
Well, loads has happened, so rather than writing a million words, I'll let the pics do the talking (with a couple of words thrown in)
So, if you remember I was having carb problems. Well, I was having these before I turbo'd the bike so I decided to put in a carb kit consisting of rubbers, needle valve and cup. I bought some 1 and 1.5mm viton seals as well for the pesky ones that go under the plastic thing. I wasn't greatly impressed with the ones supplied in the kit, they had to be stretched too much.
I also got a set of 135 mains...
While I was on a buying streak I decided to buy some of that alcantra replica seat covering; the one that looks like suede but costs like plastic
Front seat done:
Both seats done. Easy-peasy
aaaaand fitted!
Right, time to get those hands dirty in the garage! shot of the viton seals I explained earlier
I went with the 1.5's in the end. Seemed to fit a lot nicer.
Carbs half way through the rebuild:
Also got in touch with Forge as well and ordered two more (weaker) springs for the blow off valve. I didn't really want to be running 10psi if I didn't need to.
So, after a cup of coffee carbs back on. Or are they? What happened if I made an ebay purchase and wanted to see if it was any good?
Throttle bodies baby YEAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! smiley-shocked003
Think they were off a GSXR1000 K5. More to the point £56 posted
So, strip down, clear off all the shit I dont need (yet) and bolt them into the original 750 rubbers!
Squirty things in
Just check the clearance with the plenum... More than I have got with the bloody carbs!
And also tried them upside-down as the throttle linkage looked impossible to sort out on the other side of the motor.
LOADSA ROOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, at least that's something to be thinking about during the winter if I need the extra push.
So, first drag race was at East Kirkby, an old airfield. Been here many times (18 years ago...) enjoy the track. Really should have changed the tyre as it was the original one on the bike when I bought it 3 years ago. Official age of it - no idea!
This is what a million dollar race team looks like.
So, first runs were inconsistent, I was launching with too many revs on and it was blowing the tyre away. Managed to get one good run of 10.38 @ 137ish. Which is a personal best for me beating the 10.40 I did here in 1998.
Every run after that and the bike went slower. The burnouts got bigger and bigger to coax some heat into the tyre but the tyre had turned plastic and was smoking up in 1st and 2nd (to 110mph
)
Pics took from pics took of me. (Thanks becci ellis photography)
Managed to get a vid of the fastest run:
VID HERENext off we were at York. I missed the top speed at Elvington as the weather looked to0 shitty for me to lose loads of money entering and not riding.
York started of bad. Really bad. The bike just would not start and run on more than 2 cylinders. I had fitted a fuel on-off switch to stop the pump pressurising the carbs when switched off. (I leave the ignition on so the scavenge can suck the oil out of the turbo) I'd also had the tank off as I had a very slight weep from the fuel block I made. I'd ran the engine up at home and it was perfect. WHY THE FUCK WAS IT OFF NOW?
Long story short. I'll try to remember to put the fuel pipes on the right way round next time as the feed was on the return - which on mine means a long tube to the top of the tank. Hence no fuel, hence afr of 22.5 which you would think I would have found the problem sooner. Hindsight is a splendid thing... smileychair
Anyways, now with new tyre on, (nothing special, a Pirelli Demon I took off the Buell when I bought it), although the track was still a bit damp I recorded a 11.26@126
And then the clutch cable snapped
Asked in the paddock and the scrutineer had a spare from an old Kwak1000. Bugger me if it didn't fit straight in! Bit wobbly at the sprocket cover end but hey-ho!
By the way, hHow and why the hell am I going slower than a standard GSXR1100!
Later, as the track came to us, and I started launching at 4,000 the times lowered:
10.18@140,
10.15@136,
then a 10.005@143 HOW CLOSE IS THAT to the nine I want!
Then daddy came good. Daddy came REAL good.
9.88@144.6 smiley-sick004
Lad next to me asked what pressure I was running in the rear tyre. I don't know. 20psi I think. He checked it - 31psi smileystick
He lowered it to 15psi and I did this:
9.86@143
So, happy with my times we loaded up and went home. Yes, I suppose I could have stayed (as Sunday was scorching weather) but I did what I built the bike to do. A nine.
YORK, two fastest runsOK, so as you saw on the vids. I am soooooo out of practice with drag racing. short-shifting, bogging, changing gear to close to the line, not revving it enough. I know, I know!!! AFR is STILL 9.5 by the way!
You could write a book on the things I did wrong. But the result stands. 1st tick on my bucket list complete.
Next up its that 200mph.
So, nearly up to date. The final run I did was fraught with problems before the line. I'd been having battery problems all meeting and was using the camper to boost start. When I came out of the burnout for my 2nd to last run the motor coughed and stalled. Hit the button and nothing. I had to run to the pits with the bike, jump it and then get back before the gate closed. I made it but new battery was on order as soon as I got home...
I bought one of these
14 amp should be enough!
Also looked at the crappy oil return. It's been pissing me off for ages now so I decided to get a new pipe made up.
Old one and re-positioned scavenge:
Its still smoking like a 14 year-old French schoolkid so I've drained the Motul 5w oil and gone back to 10w40 as that problem only started when I changed the oil.
Was really really pleased with the amount of oil in the breather catch tank. None
Must have put the engine together right!
Cooler off and drained the oil out, then primed with the new stuff:
Stripped all the hoses off, cleaned the BOV and wastegate (as spitting oil), removed the cold side and cleaned out with brake cleaner. Now its all bone dry
Motorbatt in place
Swapped the original 750L sprocket for the 39-toother ready for next weekend
So that's it. You know as much as me now. Awaiting the drain pipe to be made and shipped up to me.
If you see me at the races, come over and say "Hi".
Thanks for looking!
