The original site was conceived as a very focused device for collecting and holding information about Oldskool suzukis. It was famously uncompromising to that end.
Other sites allowed their bandwith to to be strangled with the same old youtube clips that most people had seen 100 times before anyway on every other site. Every other site also had the eBay "take a look at this pile of shite" or "the how much?" threads.
OSS set out purposely not to be like other sites. Personally I liked that. When a site writes restrictions into its code so you can't type certain words or links are disabled it says that they are serious about their endeavors.
Take a step back and and ask yourself why the site was so good and why everyone has gotten so upset about its demise. The answer in my mind was very simple: The quality of the info was unrivaled. The people that chose to spend hours updating pictures and info about their builds chose to do so on OSS because it was a place that had credibility and and integrity and they wanted to help build the legacy and the community. That credibility attracted more talent and knowledge than any other site that I have seen.
It wasn't like other sites and that was it's recipe for success. I don't think the rules were stupid but then I understood what was going on. I would stick with all of the original ingredients if you want to create a temporary home for OSS. That might piss a few off but it might just as easily attract back some of the original big contributors.
