I won't be riding it back unfortunately,we still have ice roads over here,it put down 2" of snow last night,i have my old trusty LDV Convoy van to do the journey in.It's about a 1900 mile round trip, should get it done in 3 days.

Welcome in stevie , Your katana looks bang on , hope you enjoy it . good idea picking up in van , I had always wanted a katana, bought one and I found the footrest placement very challenging as I am 6ft tall , so I sold it on too a good oss friend who is doing a proper rebuild on it

Well, after a two and a half day almost non stop round trip down to Hamburg i'm back with the Katana,it's pretty much in the condition shown on the advert photographs and i'm pleased with it overall, the only bug in the ointment is a really noisy clutch rattle at start up or below 1000 rpm,it sounds like a bag of spanners,so i guess a clutch overhaul is the first order of the day, doe's anyone have a link to doing this? Is it a Falicon rivet and spring kit i have to purchase or are there other makes available?

That clutch rattle is very common on the 1100 GSX engines. Too much axial play in the clutch basket bearing race. Twenty years ago you could get a set directly from Suzuki for that, but I would not be surprised if they don't do that any more. But you can always get the measuring tools out and make your own. Saying that - the splines on the basket hub might be a bit worn now so the effect might only be marginal. So - best bet: get a new clutch - or failing that - pull the clutch lever each time you stop.

The noise is pretty horrendous when it is cold and running below 1000 rpm, something i cannot live with,i think the plan of action is to get a welded basket from Grumpys,a good s/h clutch hub,new springs, plates and needle roller bearing,do it once,do it right!

Horrible noise at low rpm can be less by synchronising them carbs, a common problem on hondas fours and solution.

Yepp,I'll be purchasing a set of balancers off ebay in the near future,as soon as it's warm enough it idles very smoothly and revs cleanly but the that start up noise is pretty disturbing,my last bike was a GSX1400 which was super quiet, going back in time to owning a 33yr old bike is a little 'challenging'.

Better first just pull the clutch cover and inspect the clutch to see what's going on before ordering any parts.. I'll bet the center clutch nut just worked itself loose causing even more play than could be expected from wear 'n' tear alone.. Normally a locking washer would stop the nut from becoming undone, but maybe it failed (or was perhaps left out on an earlier inspection).. Apart from the axial play the springs in the back plate might have shrunk (they normally do) causing extra play (and noise).. Not really something to be especially worried about though.. I believe back plate kits (like the falicon one) contain harder springs of the right length, otherwise use spacers (stack of washers) to fill the gaps using the original springs for a low budget fix.. (The back plate kit itself is to do with swapping the thin back plate for a thicker one, which is a must for tuned and highly stressed engines).. Oh btw.. Old aircooled engines will always be noisier than newer oil/water-cooled ones..
