Finished more or less the efe this weekend went round the block knit and it was suffering like a misfire when home on inspection with some spark indicaters on looked like one and 4 were going dim when carbs spat so took the coil off and found the Taylor ht leads were not very well crimped on so fixed that and refited the coil still spitting at just on throttle so checked timing it's got a dyna set up and the line was floating at the left pick up and when reved it moves I must admit I don't know if this is right ? I don't know where the line is meant to be now I checked valve clearances and set them to .010 between .008 / .013 then set carbs at 2 turns out but still spitting if anyone has any ideas or procedures to check everything again including right procedure for valves etc that would be great there new plugs but who's to say there good oh new float needles and checked float height

Usually just a bit of shit in the carbs or an air leak mate , simple is best and first option .drain your bowls then carb cleaner ,to rear to clean and then on boots for air leak . . . Basic as you know but often overlooked when shits messing with your head

If its an EFE - did you fit the GSX1100 mechanical advancer together with the Dyna S? I assume its an 'S' you are using? If you haven't then its effectively running fixed timing at whatever you've set it at - so its probably too advanced at idle and low rpm ......over 3000 revs most ignitions are fully advanced so works fine thereafter. If the advancer is fitted then the line will move - its doing what its supposed to do but still doesn't mean the timing is actually correct so will need checking with a timing light.

I'd say as a general rule Bud, if it's spitting back through the carbs it's running lean, worth checking the mixture screws first, I have this myself (although rs38's on mine) which is sorted by adjusting said screws, as I know the rest of the carbs and ignition, valves, timing etc are all bob on.
If they're at 2 turns now, put them back to 1 turn out and let it run for a minute or two then try it.

Thanks lads I will strip and check carbs again this week end , katana to be honest I don't know as I bought the bike as a unfinished project all stripped the engine had dyna coils and Taylor ht leads this is the first proper weekend ive run it I don't really know where the timing line should line up to when I used a timing light the line is level with the left pick up sensor and moves when it's reved

I will check again I turned mixture screws 2 turns out as per manuel which does sound lean as revs hang a little

If the coils are green dyna coils, they're 3ohm.

Dyna s pick up looks a lot newer to mine mine has exposed pick up each side Sounds like stock ignition and spark box - all the advance is handled electronically. Its pretty much un-adjustable unless the backplate has been slotted. Sounds like that can be discounted, so concentrate on carbs
