Hi guys, I've been itching to build by own bike for a while now so last week I picked up a 1980 GS550 frame. The frame's been hardtailed and I'm currently in the process of stripping all the old paint off ready for paint.
Anyway, my first question is does anyone know if other suzuki engines will fit directly into frame? This would obviously broaden the search for a donor bike. I've trawled through so many sites trying to a solid answer but nobody seems to know, or I'm asking in the wrong places...

only straight fit is a GS650 engine (I think). But anything from Teapot 600 to GSX-R1100 (basically any air/oil cooled inline 4) can be made to fit with some new engine mounting plates. Bandit 600 would be a good donor bike.

A gs650 is shaft drive not chain so probs with that the top end from the 650 will go onto the 550. if you are happy to make up some engine mounting plates (front and rear top) gsx600/750 teapot, Bandit 600, Bandit 750 retro and gsxr750 oil cooled engines will all go in nicly the gsxr1100 (1052/1127) will go in but you will need to do a lot of work to the frame depending on how the frame has already been alterd (top tubes)
