1981 gs650, stock with the baffles drilled.
ever since I got the bike it won't pull past 7k or so. Carbs are rebuilt, all the basic maintenance is done.
i've been chasing my tail thinking it was the main jetting...... not pulling past 7k WOT. I've gone from 110s to 130s but it just hangs it up at 7k.
I'm starting to thing it's an ignition problem, but IDK.
everywhere else in the rev range and throttle positions is great, but right about the time it should start getting fun, it quits.
Ive ve checked the cam timing marks and even skipped a tooth and nothing.

IDK either but the mention of "WOT" makes me suspect perhaps the throttle doesn't open the carbs fully..? With nearly everything checked (ignition timing?) and the engine running fine otherwise, maybe something as simple as either the throttle cable adjustment running out, or the slides in the carbs hanging up somewhere, might be what's going on.. Worth checking to at least be able to eliminate it from the list..

I had this on my gs, pull the timing cover off and turn the ignition timing oposite way to where it is now' basically running fully retarded timing I did this an she went full advancing and was alive.

I had this on my gs550 took carbs apart loads of times tried bigger jets, altered ign timing, checked valve timing, fitted a less worn inlet cam,but in the end it was 1 duff ignition coil. it drove me bonkers.mine just wouldn't rev over 6-7 thou unless in neutral .good luck

i assume you can rev it out when its in neutral? have you checked that the mechanical advance and retard unit on the end of the crank is moving freely and advancing/retarding as it should? have you adjusted or checked the shims? have you checked the carb diaphragms?

If you're sure the carbs are doing what they should I'd be suspect of electrical connections. I had a bad connection make my bike act like that once. Rubber parts are always suspect too, those o-rings behind the intake boots and the boots themselves. You try going bigger or smaller a size on the main jets to see what happens? They're pretty cheap and that can point you in the right direction.
