One tooth retarded on both cams ? Yep that's how an engine I put in to a so called Suzuki specialist came back after a rebuild . Any thoughts anyone ? before the solicitors letter is completed ! Tdc checked - crank of course spot on to timing marks but cams a whole tooth out ? So much so that a compression test showed 90 on open throttle with new piston / rings/ rebore . Then cams set as Suzuki suggest and compression as expected at 170 . Anyone justify this set up ??

One tooth retarded on both cams ? .. Anyone justify this set up ?? Responded by PM, but to sum it up: Either it is indeed a stupid mistake, OR it was done intentionally if the modified or installed parts resulted in the cyl. head being mounted further up and the (presumably) slotted cam sprockets running out of range.. (If the sprockets aren't slotted, a FU seems very likely though).. Measure the LC's to check the actual cam timing..

thanks for your response Arnout - as ever your knowledge is always very welcome and of help. ok so the rebuild comprised of very straight forward rebore to accept 1160 wiesco with normal head gasket and no skimming to head. valves check and grind/cut where needed full inspection of crank and gearbox and replace/report ANYTHING not up to a standard of good repair. shot blast of all casings back to ali ( as previous owner of engine had painted)
so -
rebore complete and wiesco installed I was informed crank IS ALL GOOD !!, gearbox IS BuLLET PROOF !!
engine back paint flaking off barrels (I was told blasting doesn't always get all paint off - nice try of a cop out ) fired up - 10 miles down road starter gear loose.and very obvious knocking from bottom end. bike sent back engine out and split casings re blasted I was then told the crank needed full rebuild. so went ahead. I gave dumb and dumber the benefit of doubt. works complete - bike back covered in oily hand prints !!!! and dyna s wiring shorting on battery terminal.!!! started running in , 5th gear wine and jumping out of second gear also. rocker cover leaking badly. didn't feel confident with dumb and dumbers work.(surprisingly !!! ) so did my own compression test - 90 on wot. alarm bells rang . rocker cover off cam timing checked - one tooth retarded exhast and inlet (with fixed sprockets not adjustable) did I send it back again - did I fck (legally they only get one chance to correct shite work !!!! dumb and dumber responded to my pointing out there crap work with a list of very poor excuses - such as we did some wiring as a favour !!! (which lead to dyna shorting out) or YOu should check the rocker bolts after 30 or so miles yourself
so with a third party witness and a video camera we set to work gearbox apart 2nd and 5th dogs/locators shot - pretty obvious to the naked eye. replaced with new cams reset to stock settings yep a whole one tooth advance reqiured to get cams to level marks. tdc confirmed both ways etc cam timing dealt with valve clearances redone and checked once more for good measure static timing setup head bolts re torqed (as two were loose - surprise surprise) every nut and bolt checked twice (yes dumb and dumber that's how it shold be done!!!! ) engine back in - now with some rs chatters and a fully breathing crank case she runs like the wind (although not as fast as dumb and dumber will run if I ever see them again ) and fires up at the very slightest touch of the button.
so WHO are dumb and dumber ?? I would hate to ruin my case against them but there is nothing stopping anyone PM me and asking .
am no expert suzuki specialist like dumb and dumber !!!! yeah right !!!! (apparently they both worked for suzuki a long long long time ago - however I think Suzuki now have coffee machines installed as replacements.) But 6 years working for Nissan including on cars such as the 300zx or the leopard did teach me a thing or two about screwdrivers !!

Wow.. Quite a story indeed.. And yet another reminder why you'd better do stuff like this your self instead of paying someone else to "do" it for you.. Happy to hear you got the bike sorted in the end.

About an hour or so north north east of the smoke ( roughly) . Depending on who built the engine your using for transport . So could be 15 hours sat the back of green flag . Yep their still out there . !!!!

Sorry to hear you've gone through it mate, shome shit houses out there, sorry I meant Performance houses, silly me. I suspect we've all been subjected to some form of it over the years, I know I have. That's why I've done my own stuff now for over 25 years (yes I'm that old) but I don't claim to be an expert. My engine hasn't blown yet though so I must be doing something right. Glad you got it sorted, and hope you give em what for.

After you've clobbered him Cris he should be named and very much shamed. I came very close to sending my motor to him so glad I didn't now. Are there any decent engine builders out there, Roger Upperton in Leeds seems to have a good rep.

you had a lucky escape I recon - as judging from all the comments I am receiving , and what I witnessed at there so called workshop, it seems dumb and dumber are only good at selling crap second hand parts and destroying old bikes to fund their track hobby. rip off cun.s

At shed, as said threaten them with the net, hopefully you'll get all your money back as my mate did, or just expose them anyway. Just hope nobody pays the £900 odd for the so say rebuilt Katana engine he has for sale on that site. You could even mention Srewriverracing to him and see the response. Cheers SRR
