Hi guys, I'm building a 1980 GS550E chop at the moment. I got a front end for it today from possibly a 1981 GS550L?? Anyway, the lower head stock bearing is too big to fit into my frame, I'm guessing Suzuki in their infinite wisdom decided to change it for certain models/years. Does anyone know if I can just remove the old bearing and pop a smaller one?

Couldn't it also be that Suzuki sized the bearing to suit the bike they made and not for someone 30 years down the road with a frame and headstock more suited to BSA Bantam bearings? Seriously though - if you can find a taper roller with outer dia and inner dia to fit the headstock and spindle respectively your sorted....... what that'll be from (if available) is anyones guess!

Had a quick look on alpha sports and the lower bearing all seem to be the same ref09265-30005 this is a RT 30X55X17 BEA Su Bearing ie 55 outside diameter ,30 bore and 17 thick. Is it a GS550 frame its not the front end you think ,if its a fabricated frame you may need bearing cups good site this www.alpha-sports.com/suzuki_parts.htm saves a lot of time with parts swapping
so you would need to find a taper roller bearing ?? X 55 X 17 The ?? would be the diameter of your lower bearing seat
