I kniw some people frown in then but I've always made my own cables for clutches using stainless Bowden cable (Pre stressed) and used grub screw type clamp on the clutch end In a former life I was a professional wireman whch involved soldering all day everyday. I simply don't trust solder as a mechanical joint ? But uf you do "plumb" for soldering your own nipples (oooeerr) then I would have thought a gas torch used for domestic plumbing would be the best way if achieving the necessary heat for a decent solder joint...

I've done loads with a normal, decent, soldering iron, after all, it's only the solder you're melting, not the nipple. The main thing is the usual, start with everything clean and grease free.

That's interesting, I've never had any confidence in those screw type nipples when used for clutch cables... it's good the hear yer thoughts on them. When I made cables, the only gear I had was a 30w electric soldering iron and I used shop bought electronics solder (rosin core). I never had a DIY cable let me down but suspect that was due in no small part to the preparation I did before soldering. The tip is to use a proper nipple with a stepped hole and after threading the cable through it, you need to use fine nose pliers to bend the last few millimetres of the strands back on themselves so they form a "bud" shape. The cable is then pulled tightly back into the nipple and soldered up. As Bluedog mentioned, everything has to be totally free of any grease or oil. Bet all this talk of nipples and buds will be gettin' Dave and Ken a bit worked up smileyt2801

At the end nothing beats the smoothness of the genuine cable, especialy the clutch one.

You should make you own! This thread has just gone full circle ... anywayz, I found some good looking bars on the bay earlier, they have a nice rise, are wider than stock and are fat too, what more could a guy want (don't answer that!). Will get 'em when I'm done budgeting for the bits I need and then I'll see what the situation is with longer cables.

Maybe from -GSX1100L would fit. I hear ya man, years ago it was the done thing when changing bars on a road bike, to see if it had a factory custom cousin with taller bars... e.g, Suzuki GS550E >> GS550L. My GSX is the late 1990's 'Inazuma' model, not the earlier air cooled bike. Don't think Suzuki ever made a factory custom with the 750 oil boiler engine?.

I made my own, kit from Venhill but used a busa twist grip. Set it up using the screw nipples then replaced with the soldered ones.
Ive got a little butane soldering iron from Maplin, works a treat and much better than electric.
