have put a wn head on rf900 engine all going smoothly had to swap sump and that was pritty much it, sprayed up engine and got it back in the frame and started sweet... so i started rejetting the carbs with factory pro 3 and then the next time I started the engine coolant shot out the side of the head!! after running for a bout 15 mins I was gutted.. now im thinking the problem was using a head gasket for a gsxr wn head appose to using the rf 900, maybe the pressure just built up from the coolant and had no where to go..any ideas? what usually causes the head to blow?? thanks

i remember reading about an RF900/GSX-R hybrid on the old OSS, by some Canadian dude, don't remember the name. Anyway he said that some work was needed to match the head (RF900) and cylinders (GSX-R1100) if i remember correctly.

Put the 2 head gaskets together and check all the oil and waterways etc are the same.If not, modify the gasket that is the correct size for the cylinder bores to suit. If the oil and waterways are the same, I would use the gasket that fits the bores.

RF900 head on GSXR-1100 motor = must match 1100 head gasket to RF head (cooling port, cam chain area). Need a spacer to keep ptv clearance and decent compression ratio. GSXR-1100 head on RF900 block = must match GSXR-1100 head gasket to RF900 block. 1100 head combustion chamber is 5-6 cc bigger than RF head. Haven't done that conversion but I suspect it is more complicated than the other way around.

That RF looks so damn good that I honestly thought of getting one for myself... It's a pity I cant afford any new bikes at the moment.
How it is with RF head, can u put valves as big as 1100's in them?

I have run a rf900 engine with a 750wn head on using a rf900 head gasket for over a year with no problems

have just took the 750 head off, luckily i could see on the gasket where the coolant has tried to go but has been blocked off on the gasket. that was using a 750 gasket, also as it blew it blew the threads off that held down the head... im going to take it to an engineering shop to get it re skimmed and hopefully they will be able to do something with the threads!! if that gets sorted I will be purchasing a rf900 head thanks to 'goatblowers' previous experiance. Thanks for your replys

Yep use the head gasket for a rf900 also what I found was the cooling fan was resting on the front pipe as the engine is taller which in turn wore through the rad knackering the cure was a 15mm spacer on the lower rad mount
