with bike in neutral rear wheel spins nice and free, but put it into gear with the clutch lever pulled back to the bars there is a lot of drag on the rear wheel!!I have bleed the master and slave cylinders but it is still the same. if i start the bike and try to put it into gear it makes a big clunk and stalls. i imagine it is some sticking clutch plates, but as you guys have all the experience of B12s and i dont i would like to hear your thoughts before i go stripping the clutch out

Could be a number of things, warped plates, uneven spring pressure, push rod not being able to engage/disengaging clutch properly.

Does the engine have the correct type of oil? With the engine turned off, in gear and the clutch lever pulled, try and push it to release the plates
if this doesn't work, the last thing to try before clutch disassembly would be to adjust clutch push rod

I've had clutches stuck before Steve, only once did I have to take the cover and pressure plate off to physically seperate the plates... seem to remember the other times all that was needed was to put the bike in second and rock it back and forth??. Usually occurs (for me anyway) when a bike's been stood a while.

Eh??? - clutch push rod is a single straight shaft - there is no adjustment! How many miles? Sounds just plain worn out to me? How easy is it to find neutral with engine running - that's usually a tell tail!

Mostly is natural worn push rod, and as katana said you can determine the wear with the effort to find neutral while running. Most of the bikes have that when cold and by some you have to live with it. When engine not running, and gear selected drag is normal

rocked it a fair bit, still nothing, took the clutch out, most of the metal plates have bluing/overheat marks, so i have ordered a new clutch kit for it. might order a new clutch actuator rod as well while i am on the job

might be an idea to clean the slave cylinder out on the sprocket casing. Only two Phillips screws. I`ve had dirt build up inside giving me clutch problems. dirt builds up around the piston and push rod. Once cleaned out clutch was ok. Turned out to be grime and dirt thrown off the chain.

How easy is it to find neutral with engine running - that's usually a tell tail! The push rod is adjustable, it says in the manual how to do it. Behind The round rubber thing on the sprocket cover is where you do the adjustment, it's identical to how you do a valve adjustment, and works the same way. Loosen the nut, screw in rod until it's just seated, Then back off half a turn, tighten nut, done If it's very worn creating too much freeplay, the clutch wont fully disengage.
