A 160 bhp Katana? Yes, go for it! How? Many different ways and components and mods to choose from.. Better read up to make an informed decision (articles/books/forums) or else hand over your cash to a well referenced tuner/ engine builder and have him decide what route to take..

As they don't rev that high (without breaking stuff), i'd go big capacity - 1327 minimum, 1500 better! It'll need a good head and oversize valves, G4 cams will work with a big motor. Start with a GS1150 / EFE, re-worked crank with Katana rods if you want more rpm and reliability. 10.5 - 11:1 compression and a decent exhaust with 38mm or 40mm flatslides and you'll be on target

i have read an australian race katana 1260cc is a good size for 160hp motors but for the street hot motors . 13.5 ratio is heavy

13.5:1 ain't gonna work with today's road gas and detonation will kill a tuned motor quick sharp. I don't wanna knock your ambition but you are trying to double stockish horsepower with an extra 100 odd cc's - that equals a pretty highly strung motor for a road bike - maybe with a sniff of NOS it'd be a blast?

I would say there are / have been, more big bored GSX motors used in racing than there are probably std bored ones still running on the street - worldwide! A small bore must be revved higher to make power, they don't breathe as well due to limited valve size increase possible hence the limitation on power. A big piston on the other hand has a better bore to stroke ratio allowing increased rpm potential, bigger valves for better breathing, pocketted pistons for bigger valves & lift, increased piston area for cylinder pressure to act on - more benefits than cons, and if done as a package no less reliable than a stocker - just more power!

I know of a guy in the USA that likes building 1400(1395)cc street engines. In fact I am building one for myself that will be fed by some RS40's.
