I used to paint all me engines with smoothrite, which worked pretty good but recently learnt that the original makers (finnigans) sold out to ICI and the product is now crap. So, been looking at what others on here are usin', VHT and Techcote seem good... do either need a primer?

Can't answer the question but at least I now know why hammerite is recently shit. And why I can no longer buy smoothrite as it's now hammerite 'smooth'. Why buy a company and destroy it's product?

It's all for the good of the environment don't you know. This is a question that gets asked all the time, depends on what colour you want. PJ1 VHT black seems to be the choice of the masses, but it is becoming harder to get hold of (said the actress to the bishop) which makes it more expensive. I go into a lot of industries including ICI, modern paints are governed by so many factors nowadays, I'm surprised it even tunrs up pre-mixed. Next we'll be mixing it ourselves with milk! BBQ or wood stove paint is also a good option, but may not have the finish type you're after.

Can't answer the question but at least I now know why hammerite is recently shit. And why I can no longer buy smoothrite as it's now hammerite 'smooth'. Why buy a company and destroy it's product? As Quazi mentioned, it's most likely environmental regs that led to a change in the paint's ingredients. I also read that there isn't as much black pigment in smoothrite as there used to be, so coverage was shit.. recently read that about PJ1 too It's all for the good of the environment don't you know. This is a question that gets asked all the time, depends on what colour you want. Aye, if it's not the environment they're protecting, it's "us". Any excuse to draw up more beauractaric BS....soon we won't be able to do anythin' for rules regs and red tape But the question isn't really what paint to use Quaz' ... it's "do either of these 2 paints I've short-listed need a primer?" Thing is, I never needed a primer when I used smoothrite and I'm just wonderin' if the likes of VHT, are just tryin' to screw more money outta people by sayin' that engines should be primed first?. I used Simoniz Engine Enamel Gloss Black Spray Paint 500ml on my 1100 engine. Happy with the results. I tried satin black VHT from the local auto shop, but it didnt look right to my eye. Couldnt find anywhere local that stocked gloss black VHT so order from egay, which was cheaper as well for once! Yeah, I saw Simoniz made engine paint fella but couldn't find a review of it... good to know you found it to be ok, yer engine certainly don't look too shabby! .... did you use a primer?. Agree about prices on the bay, loadsa folk seem to think it's cheap there but it's surprising how if ya look around, things can be bought for less elsewhere.

How do you get such a good finish, do you use a primer, undercoat, overcoat, waistcoat or what. More info needed for future use.

The only rattlecan paint worth using nowadays is Crafts spray. I have tried many different ones but Crafts is fuel-proof. A few years ago I cleaned an EFE rocker cover till bare aluminium, degreased it, cleaned it with water and left it to dry. This makes a very thin oxidation layer form to which the paint sticks very well. The paint still looks good now. Also painted some ESD carbs gloss black, still look like new one year and a few thousand KM's later. ESD engine painted with Crafts:

Nice job on the ESD engine Captain Not heard of Crafts before, will check 'em out... thanks for the tip Kitkatman, when I used smoothrite, and I guess this applies to most of the other paints too, I just used a combo of hand wire brush, rotary wire brush (on a power drill) and course grit paper to prep an engine. Would degrease using petrol and clean kitchen rolls (leaves less lint behind). Pretty mucky job TBH but worth puttin' in the effort

When did Hammerite become shit? I did 2 engines in it, 2010 and 2011....still looks brand new ..... I did the same wire brush / rotary brush / wet and dry prep with real care, no primer. It's still the best engine finish I've seen

Don't know, I last used it around 1994 and it was fine then. I read about the change in quality on various online forums and had no reason to doubt what I was reading. Just two of the forums mentioned and the threads are dated 2012/13 smoothritesmoothrite 2
