Ok I looked into this. ...I've been using the "shit stuff" and its still given me the brst results I've ever seen, got the original idea off a mate from here who builds custom boilers.
The complaint is that now it is thin and needs decent prep. Correct, a lot of patience and very thin coats at at least 25 mins intervals.
My engines look like new....even managed to fool the guys in the Triumph club who think ive repaired a well known powder coat issue...again with the hamnerite. I use satin spray, lots of warm air, can warmed up in hot water, a good week curing time. Dont discount this stuff.
Btw I use VHT for most things, including their exhaust paint. Their standard Satin on my Triumph silencers worked a treat - so maybe they'd cope with boiler engines. For general spraying VHT is my favourite, for engines though still Hammerite

Yes Hammerite gives good results but need a lot of preparation and patience.
As said I get similar or better results using Crafts, with much less hassle.

I haven't used smoothrite since '94 but strongly suspect that it isn't as good now, as it was then. So, I'm glad that *you* like it WSN, and if you've got good results with it now, imagine for a moment how much better those results might be if the formulation hadn't changed. I painted my first engine with the stuff back in 1988, it had just become an "in thing" with the custom/chopper crowd back. But times change, and products change... me?, I like to step outta my comfort zone every now and then and try somethin' new

Cheers Captn, did another search for this last night but instead of using the words "crafts paint", I tried "crafts spray"... had lots of hits in google images but most directed to Polish and Russian sellers!
