Hello, starting a build soon, been gathering parts. I was initially gonna put a thousand lump into GS750 , deterred by SVA and the front/rear compromise, plus I love having a kickstart and my original (always evolving !) plan was to put an 850 top end on. Anyhow's, looked at GS1000 frames (with V5) on ebay, too expensive for my liking, kept looking until a cheaper one turned up, advertised as being "straight". Hit the B.I.N button, straight it's not, not flippin none of it - currently having hassle with seller who's insistant there's nowt wrong with it... Maidstone motoliner have inspected & say in reality it's fit for the skip Found another frame and log book, all looks good except it's got some welds on subframe tubes the first (later by 3 years) frame doesn't have ? pic's hopefully coming up.

Not the welds on the pillion brackets, they've got to come off for a bigger swinging arm, it's the welds on the bigger tubes / rear frame supports ? They look factory finish / good quality & all appears to be straight on this frame from visual check. I'd like confirmation from you guys please, then I'll confirm with seller that it's all go to get registered in my name

Maidstone motoliner have inspected & say in reality it's fit for the skip I'm sure the seller of the bent frame didn't think anyone would bother to check for straightness on delivery... and of course, X amount of weeks down the line, when yer build's in full swing, and realise it's as a straight as a grand prix circuit, it's too late to get a refund then... what a twat!. Send the bastard back mate, and get ebay involved from the outset... they do usually work hard to get a good result for buyers in this kinda situation. As for the other frame, all ya can do is keep askin' around on 'ere until another '79 owner comes along.... or try lookin' at larger pics of GS thou bikes on google images and hope ya can find one large enough to zoom in on that subframe area. There are ways of checkin' for frame trueness at home if ya wanna be sure it's ok.

Those welds are non standard. I would be dubious about the history of that frame. You said the welds were of good quaulity, factory spec. Jap welding has never been that good, at least in the looks dept. My own 79 GS1000 does not have such welds.............. Jonboy

that frame is far from standard. The top part of the tube is longer and has been added later. Aye, aye Captain C .... I realise the frame in the pic I posted isn't standard fella... just thought it was a bit too much of a coincidence to see another welded join in that area of the frame?. Those welds are non standard. I would be dubious about the history of that frame. You said the welds were of good quaulity, factory spec. Jap welding has never been that good, at least in the looks dept. How can ya tell that weld is non standard?, looks to be the same as some of the other welds in that area to my eyes I know what yer sayin' about jap welding tho', especially on bikes of this era. Maybe the guy who welded this one up had got a BJ the night before and wuz on top form!
