Sadly, I can't use the stock airbox with the replacement subframe that I have on my project GSXR 750 WP (1993). So I'm looking at getting either Ram Air sock filters or K&N dual pods. or ? There was a discussion about this on the Farcebook page a while ago, but it's disappeared now, so I thought I'd bring up the old argument From what I can see, either type would fit, but I still have some questions: - Effects on power band/ RPMs?
- How much louder do they make the engine?
- What kind of power gain?
- Are they damaging to the engine over the long term?
- Is a new jet kit absolutely necessary?
- I have BST38SS carbs, what's the distance between the carbs centres on them? 85mm?
If you have any extra info, I'd really appreciate it, Cheers, G

I don't think anybody does a jet kit for the early watercooled carbs, this may say something about trying to jet them for filters

they have low resistance. And they are well-filtered air.
K&N and the like, very bad filtered. Dual filter is not convenient to install, and they are often dumped from carburetors.
And I would suggest to set the standard rubber velostaks on the carburetor, and then filter it.
I spent a lot of dyno testing on my 750 use velostaks gave additional 5 hp at medium rpms.

Thanks for the info.
"they are often dumped from carburetors."
What do you mean? They fall off?
"I would suggest to set the standard rubber velostaks on the carburetor, and then filter it."
Do you mean cut the rubber pieces from the standard airbox?

They fall off? - Yes
Velostaks can be pulled by hand. No need to cut. It has the shape of horns.

He's talking about the rubbers from carb to airbox. You'll find it has a radius at the airbox end. Push an "all foam" filter, like the ones you pictured, possibly single rather than dual, more surface area for filtering. When you fit them, try not to push the filter end face right up to the end of the rubber. You want to have the end of the rubber in a "free air" space in the filter, not touching the foam.

Thanks for the tip, I was having a look at the airbox, and found the rubbers (they were attached to it). I think I know what you mean about fitting them - makes sense What sort of differences do you think I can expect to handling/ mid range response? (I'm not building a drag bike) And is there a particular filter you'd recommend over another and why? Cheers.

The handling with be no different, the mid range fueling will depend on how good you get your jetting. I've used RamAir filters and found them to have no more resistance that open carbs on the dyno but dislodge a pleasing amount of muck filtered out on cleaning.
