71 Sorry.. couldn't resist... days till Classic TT ferry sails Holiday over & back at proper job today, big thanks to John A as I should have restarted work on his KH project during the mornings this week but will continue on the 711 wiring. Not on a go slow but needed to back the hours off a bit, house looked like a drop in center, Ozzy wanted me to go & do dog things & of course beer to be drunk Everything in the tail piece is wired up, just waiting for some new latched terminals to arrive to replace the ones in the connector block that attaches to the fuse holder as the existing ones were badly corroded. Next job is looking at how to de-wire the monitor box & the GS1000 switch gear is cabled differently to the EFE loom so have to swap a few connectors. All being well should be able to fire the engine up at the weekend & put it through a heat cycle. Rear brake has lost pressure, I noticed when I was bleeding it that if holding the brake on pressure it would slowly loose the lever & you could just about hear a noise in the rear master cylinder. Wasn't loosing fluid but I have got hold of a rebuild kit, the master cylinder was new old stock when I got it a few years ago so maybe the seals in it had aged. Other than that I have to make the brackets for the front mudguard. Probably look to get this out & on the road for start of July, which gives me a month & a half to ride it around before the Classic TT. Also means I can chill out doing the last few bits instead of just throwing crazy hours into it like I needed to over the past month trying to make the TT proper, had a good time doing that but always knew the clock was ticking.

Hey Alan. I don't make too many comments on forums but I have to say, absolute respect to you. I've followed your builds both on this site and the old one and like many look forward to your detailed and informative posts. Your work is not only outstanding but for me (and I suspect many others) truly inspirational. The commitment that you've shown is humbling.I've also been building an ET based 'fighter over the last three years and often use your build/s to motivate me and get my finger out.
What a fuckin cool bike you're building. Keep it Oldskool and keep it aircooled.

Been a few weeks since I last posted. Just want to say thanks to everyone who read this & posted up, think I got a little obsessive somewhere in the middle of my two weeks off to work on it, talk about eat, sleep & breath it. Kept me going when I was dead on my feet to read posts on here, got a few more hours out of me each day. Respect to everyone who starts a project, whatever skill level, bottom line is that anyone who does make sacrifices to do so, money & time spent on bikes means less of each to go round elsewhere. And fuck anyone who tells you it's only a bike, they understand shit. 711 ! The one thing that I was going to redo if I had got to the TT races would have been the wiring, to get there I was going to throw the stock EFE loom on & just modify the minimum I need to get it hidden out the way & working. As I did not get that far I have taken the time to do it properly from the start & yeah way more work than I thought ! With the custom subframe, relocating electrical parts to the tail piece, using GS1000 switch gear & Dyna 2000 ignition & shiftlight I have run so many new cables in it feels like I have made a new loom... Used the japanese style connectors which I have crimped & soldered. Managed to understood the wiring diagrams & completely de-wired the monitor box, pulling out all the unwanted cables from the loom. Still have the left hand switch gear that controls lights on/off hi/lo & indicators to wire + coils & make up the Taylor ignition leads then will be time to fire the engine hoping to do that this weekend. Already fitted the Pingle fuel tap into the petrol tank & have a can of petrol waiting !! Had the Ultrabatt hooked up the other day to test what I had done. The Dyna 2000 ignition led lit up when ignition turned on as did the shift light & spins over nicely on the starter button. Hydraulic brake switch lights work & have an awesome led stop tail light bulb, can't believe how bright it is, got it from ebay but via China or somewhere which I forget. Must take a picture... So yeah everything that I have wired up works & not that much more to do. Sounded nasty just spinning over, can't wait to actually hear the Racefit can.. Oh yeah forgot, been building this in the living room & when I first span it over for the first time I think Ozzy (the dobermann) had been asleep on the sofa in the dining room... all I heard was four feet landing back on the floor

how you doing alan , you cracking on ? Proper jobs getting in the way at the moment which is a pisser... Finished the wiring apart from cutting the Taylor spark plugs leads to length, tested the operation of the circuits, lights, clocks, etc & all seems good. When I was wiring the gear indicator in the EFE clocks I found that the (lock up) clutch wasn't engaging correctly, that's to say in gear you can still wheel the bike around with the clutch fully out. I need to take the engine cover off & check some of the setting measurements. If the clutch was good to go all I need to do is put the Taylor Leads on, set up the timing on the Dyna 2000, lube the top end & fire it up !

Sorry to hear that alan was hoping all was good at strangeland It's 6 weeks till I go to the Isle of Man for the Classic / Manx so I'm chilled, no drama yet, work threw me a curve ball which I've had to deal with but pays the mortgage... I'm sure the clutch will be easy to sort, Dave FBM's less than an hour away & he says if I need a hand I can take it over to see him. just finding that hour or so at the moment !

Someone needs to send this man a pallet of coffee, a decent camera ... and about 3 months vacation. Keep up the good work oh Strange One. Yeah dreaddave speaks the truth Only been able to put a few hours in at the weekends & hit some issues with a few worn out parts, which has been frustrating as just want to get it fired up ! Wiring is all done, tested all the circuits & everything works. Mentioned earlier that when I was clicking through the gears to wire the EFE clocks gear position indicator I found that the clutch was not engaging properly, that's to say with the clutch lever fully out you could still easily wheel the bike around in gear. I thought this may be down to the setup of the MTC lockup clutch & that was my job last weekend, not used a lockup before so it was fun to understand how they work. Issue was actually that the pressure plate was making contact with the clutch centre & not clamping fully on the plates, so the stack height was too low. Correct number of plates & looking at my gen Suzuki manual whilst they measured at the minimum spec they were still within the service limit so not 100% sure why this was. Maybe also some wear the the clutch centre & pressure plate perhaps. Read that you could adjust the stack height to tune the lockup airgap by adding steels so thought I might as well throw one in & see if it fixed the problem. It did & the clutch now engages correctly, ended up with a just over 2mm airgap between the arms & the buttons in the pressure plate. This is going to be run on the street not the strip so that should be good. Ideally I would have got a new set of plates but the money I got from selling my GSXR to finish this has long since gone so hoping the extra steel will get me through a few miles this year. Onto this weekends session.. Fitted the RS38's, which are a used set I got in a deal, luckily I hooked them up only to a tube & a funnel as the bike was still in the house & before pushing it outside I wanted to see if it would fire. Bloody things piss petrol out the overflows like me on a pub crawl. No idea how these came off a "running bike". The float heights were wrong from a genuine Mikuni manual I found online, 19.5 - 20.0mm as opposed to 17mm spec. Yeah exactly what I thought.... set the floats to 17mm but in my mind that was only going to allow more fuel in... Still pissed with that change so I suspect that the previous owner had tried to stop the flooding by changing the float heights instead of buying new float needle valves. Took the floats off to inspect the needle valves & they do appear to have some ridges. I'll order some new ones during the week ready to fit next weekend. Not 100% sure I have the Dyna timed up correctly, I think I have & using the 'test' option I do get a spark at the plugs when turning the engine over by hand. Guess I'll find out next weekend... So my final build up has been hit with a number of worn out bits, the AP racing front master cylinder piston corrosion, ebay hayabusa rear caliper seal leaking, worn clutch components & wear in the 'used' Mikuni RS38 needle valves. Is what it is & of course all part of getting an old bike back on the road using some old parts, frustrating having spent so long to get all the fabrication stuff to work to be delayed getting the bike on the road by other stuff. Could do with some good luck !!

Hi Strangewayz, Great build, respect all the work you have put in. I am a bit concerned about your sprocket arrangement , could you possible lock wire one of the nuts to the sprocket ? It can get very messy if it comes of, or just loose can destroy your output shaft. Keep up the good work. Cheers SRR
