Seeing as the motor's done 45k miles and as far as I know it's on its original camchain, I think it might be prudent to change it - it's just a nagging feeling I've got and want to do it, especially as I'm thinking of selling it later this year...
I've got no problems with the general process, the only thing I'm not sure about is how to 'break' the existing chain? Is it best to seal off the engine and get a dremel in there to grind out a peg on the old chain? Not sure I like the idea of grinding stuff out that close to the engine.... Is there a better way?

the best way is to install an endless chain. Which can be done without splitting the crankcases, just remove the camshafts and the chain comes out at the crankshaft side.

That's a bonus, didn't realise you could get it out in one piece - too used to centre cam chains to even think it'd come out the side!! Cheers, Martin

i have done it around 10 years ago on a SRAD 600, it took me 1,5 hours in total

Nice one, I'll get an endless chain and get it fitted. Seeing as some lowlife c*nts stole my Kawasaki GT550 last night, I'll be using this every day now, I'd better get it done sooner rather than later...
I assume genuine Suzuki is best? Or are there any preferred aftermarket brands?
