OK. So back in the day I saw this pant wettingly cool GSX in issue 21 of Streetfighters. For those with long memories or back issues to reference it was the Green Ren n Stimpy GSX 11 in a GS thou chassis with ZXR 750 wheels and forks and JMC arm etc.
I loved it and to this day still think in it's original guise one of the best fighters I've seen, there was just something about it.
Anyway a few months later, when I lived in Chester, I was ficking through MCN small adds and saw an advert for a "GSX 11 based fighter, see issue 21 Streetfighters". I didn't connect it initially and checked issue 21. Woah there it was, up for sale. Cut a long story short I took the train through to Leeds with helmet, leathers and a fistful of notes. A brief exchange, swapping of notes and a relaxing little smoke I suddenly found myself to be the new owner of this huge, noisy, cool and to be honest, somewhat intimidating GSX based Streetfighter and looking forward to riding back to Chester in February.
I remember that by the time I got to Chester I was feeling a lot more confident with the bike and decided to give it a bit of a handful. Sheeeeeit wheelying off the throttle in first and second and getting to highly illegal speeds a lot quicker than I expected. Yes you're right, I WAS HOOKED.
Over the years I changed the bike a fair bit and developed a love for this old GSX based bruiser. Having said that it wasn't the most reliable of bikes and caused me more than my fair share of grief including the time it snapped a valve after backing off from 130 coming back into Chester after a run into North Wales.
Anyway in it's final guise it looked like this
In 2009 I emigrated to Australia and like an idiot gave away my rolling chassis! I did though keep a lot of good bits including the motor, flatslides, oil cooler, Dyna coils and Dyna ignition and some other bits and pieces.
So after having lived in Melbourne for a couple of years things were right for me to start building a GSX ET based Streetfighter. As far as I'm concerned a classic 'fighter keeping the original bodywork, instruments, lights, etc but with a monster motor modern running gear, brakes and up to date electronics. Nothing really new or different here but this time I wanted my bike to be done properly and to look as if it just rolled out of the showroom. As such I knew that this project would be long term as finances allowed and as I found the people that could help me with this project. Being new to Melbourne and for that matter Australia I knew that there was a fair bit of work ahead.
First thing I needed though was a bike. Luckily for me I found exactly what I needed about six or seven miles up the road from me and for a bloody bargain of a price. Result.
More to follow
