Hello, can anyone reccommend a durable engine case paint that best matches bare aluminum. Had me engine cases vapour blasted and am going to repaint to match original stylee. Any thoughts? Tried PJ1 in the past in black, which worked well but am after something decent in silver.
Cheers, T.

That looks so nice I think i'd mask off all the internals and screw threads and clear powder coat it! Either that or clear 2 pack paint but that would be more susceptible to stone chipping - dunno about its heat tolerance...certainly not for cyl head or barrels but should be ok for cases?

I agree Katana, that would be a nice way to go. Not too sure about duarability though. Powedercoat is a neat idea but once chipped and shit gets in the coating can tend to lift/flake off, had this happen on frames etc add a bit of heat and might not last too long. Ive come across some aluminium VHT style paint that's good for up to 300 degrees. No primer required apparently its quite good. Will try a bit on the sump pan as a taster and go from there... Its a shame to cover up the finish though..ACF-50? If anyones interested, they were done by Aquablast in cambridge. Very competetive pricing and offer aluminium welding, tube bending and ultrasonic cleaning to name a few. Quick turnaround too-Whoop!

Paid £90. £45 a casing ain't too bad. They were proper manky and had been stored v poorly. Would have took me forever to clean myself, been there, done that and couldn't handle it this time Haha! Still got the barrels and head to do etc at somepoint though. Think i'm gona go the ACF-50 route with these for now. The engines not going in a bike any time soon so will do for now until I decide what im gona do with it. Tried some paint on the sump and its not looking too clever. Rats.

Hello, can anyone reccommend a durable engine case paint that best matches bare aluminum. Well, as for VHT I've used it only in black (flat black SP130, satin black SP139, and the wrinkle black SP201) and I'm happy with it despite some minor flaking on the EFE head (which may be due to poor prep..) The VHT paint does take quite some time to fully cure and harden (needs several heating cycles). As for silver high temp engine paints I've only used the cheap stuff from Motip (or Dupli-color, which probably is the same stuff) for a number of times. Sprays well, sticks well, but not very chemically resistant (dissolves in white spirit). Also due to the flat/mat surface structure dirt sticks to it easily.. It does however not yellow at all, which is a very good thing. Despite having no experience with powder coating engine (parts) I would not recommend going this route. Covering an engine in a thick layer of plastic does not seem like a wise thing to do imho, especially with an aircooled engine. Perhaps just the side covers, but certainly not any other parts of the engine. Never heard of ACF-50 stuff, but it sounds good as an allround (metal) protector (may get some myself and kick that crappy WD-40 out), but choosing not to paint the engine and trusting the ACF-50 to keep it from corroding sounds a bit risky and experimental to me. Maybe do some googling and try to find reviews of people having used the stuff on bare alu engines first?

hi mine is just heavy coated in gt85 but I use ac50 if it,s in storage.no worries when you jet wash it about taking the case paint off then just make sure you recoat in before the alloy turns dull. If you use ac50 don't plaster it on.It,s a dust magnet and makes the motor look purple tinted

The process i am going to use is a vapour blast - they use a "depositing silicone ball" blast medium , which as it says leaves a deposit of silicone in the previously blasted cases - looks factory - stays looki g factory - pricey though

I've always had mine stove enamelled, only ever had black, blue ,yellow, pink, gold, but never silver. Lasts well and stays shiny. Cheers SRR
