Not so long ago for financial reasons I had to sell my GS1000 streetfighter I had for nearly 20 years. Usual monoshock using GSXR running gear etc. The funny thing is (?) how much I miss going out and tinkering with the old girl. Fixing this fixing that. With the money I got for it I did manage to buy a Triumph Trophy 1200 which had been cafe racered but not finished. It was only cheap big CC bike I could find and after few running problems have found out previuos owner(s) have bodged trhe carbs to work so now looking for set of either OE 36 mm mikuni`s or mk2 bandit 1200 carbs 40mm. It just struck me that it wasn` t just a GS1000, it had been a large part of my life for may years, keeping me out of mischief :-) But heres the thing after selling the GS because couldn`t finish it and now having these probs with my Triumph makes me realise should have kept GS and soldiered on and finished it. Still once Trumpet is finished and sorted I know it will be a good bike but sometimes changing something doesn`t always work. If you get what I mean One day once finances are better will get myself another big old Suzuki Aircooled bike and start again.

Does seem strange that they become such a part of your life yet never felt that about any other bike I`ve had. Still one day there will ba another GS1000 parked up outside. Might need a second mortgagae to buy one by then :-)

Although ive not owned an air cooled bike (unless you count my old tw125 learner bike) I do fully understand what you mean...there have been bikes I've owned and modified/personalised but had to sell for one reason or another then spent years and lots of money trying to fill the hole left by them...its not always worth the short term fix.
I'm kinda going through a bit of a cash flow issue atm and have considered selling my gsxr but even though it doesn't owe me much money wise, I can't bring myself to sell it as like you've said, its become part of my day to day life wether working on it or just looking at it

I think it is because we all spend so much time looking or fixing them that they do become part of your life. Rather be outside fixing or working on the bike than sat indoors watching the goggle box

It is indeed fella, I hope you find something else to fill that hole. I know the feeling exactly, avoided the situation many times myself as I didn't want to feel that way. Kind of why I ended up keeping my efe engine all these years, I've owned it since 1989 sold off bits and bobs over the years but never wanted to sell the engine. Good job as it's now in this So glad I didn't, but you see those kind of decisions stop things like that happening, as that bike wouldn't exist if I'd had sold of the engine, as it was the basis for the whole project.

Never thought to keep the motor because of monoshocking, GSXR running gear without engine there wasn`t much left GS1000. That bike is a beastie quazi

Thanks fella. I suppose the engines are the difficult and most costly bits to replace over time, most of the cycle parts on many older bikes are still widely available (I know there will be exceptions). Lets face it, we can stick any engine in anything nowadays eh, it's the origninal engine that is always at the heart of any project.
