Hello everyone, It's getting a little bit annoying now, the engine has a rattlesnake inside. It sounds like when you try to put your car into gear without clutch... but not so loud 4 years and 10k miles ago the engine has been totally restored, Wiseco pistons, oil cooler connected to the oil pressure switch, new oil pump and new GS 750 gears, lot of new OEM stuff in gearbox, etc. Now I've got brand new clutch backing plate and springs, new APE clutch kit, and rattling is still there. I always thought it was the clutch basket, but after restoring it the rattling didn't end. As I was sitting next to the bike for hours and listened to the sounds, I couldn't recognize where the sound comes from. Head is okay, cylinder too, crank sounds okay, clutch too... It comes somewhere from oil pump or gearbox, but only when engine reaches it's optimal temperature. I don't know if it counts or not, last year I had problems with the Pingel fuel tap I have. One time I realized that it was leaking, and in two weeks time a lot of fuel went into the engine. I didn't start engine, changed oil and repaired tap immediately, but I don't know if it's been the first time to leak or not. It may have caused injuries in bearings etc. The other theory is that the old rattling clutch basket may have damaged primary gear and gearbox...

It sounds like when you try to put your car into gear without clutch... but not so loud camchain tensioner? I've a manual tensioner, I always did so that I turned it on fully with hand and turned 1/4 out. I don't know if it's right, I've read it on some forums to do so...

on the later clutches there's a shim behind the outer thrust washer did you check the clearance, might have changed cos of new back plate, also there's a little rubber peg thing on the back of the basket check that's ok

I didn't feel if it was neccessary, but will do it btw I don't remember any rubber peg thing around the basket, also didn't see such a thing in my manual. But I've now realized that I put the thrust washer incorrectly, the oil groove is inside... May this cause the rattling too???

the little rubber peg thing is on the back of basket in the notches / cut out where the oil pump gear engages

Ooops, don't remember such a thing! Must check it, I don't think it's there! I should have read the manual more carefully! "Check that the rubber damper plug is in position behind the primary driven gear assembly."

On the plus side, it'll be a cheap fix.

also check the bolt on the clutch cover nearest the ignition cover the one with the o ring not too long as it can rub on the clutch
