Budget 11/7 watercooled yep that's right not 7/11...

So yeah the title says 11/7...Picked up this 97' gsxr1100 with 93-94ish 750 top end mill in 1100 cases for $500, the previous owner originally picked this up from auction just to extract the motor to use in his custom buggy project however after several years he never did anything with it.
The motor has only 9,000 miles on it! Posted on craigslist for $600 then a while later he told me I can take it for $500 so heck with it, why not!

I was looking for my first street bike after selling 03' yz450f I rebuilt. She looked like this when I loaded it up and brought to home.

I had the bike on my truck bed for 2 weeks until I found a new home for her and tore it down for inspection!

Further into the inspection...

It has 750 internals swapped in gsxr1100 cases with stock 1100 carbs retained. I am not able to figure out if it is 1100 or 750 head. I would assume it is 1100 head because of stock intake boots and carbs.
Have yet to confirm if it has 6 speed gearbox.
92-93 fairings and 92-95 forks/brakes/wheels have been put on, unknown history what happened to original parts.
I would assume it was involved in accident but the VIN status are clean even though it didn't come with the title.

Nice bonus with the carbs that they was jetted with stage 3 kit and tuned for individual filter pods, it didn't come with any pods except single panel K&N filter and airbox end cover lol. Carbs needs to be cleaned and rebuilt though.

It was missing front brake hoses, non functional front master cylinder, right rearset and rear master cylinder, upper fairing stay, clutch lever, windscreen, battery, complete instrument cluster (only came with speedo and tach itself), drive chain, handle grips, turn signals, and hardware bits.

And of course a set of tires that are not dry rotted...
I was hoping that showa forks was in good condition, nope... it had dings on the stanchions so they are junk



I prompted to search for used set of forks and thank god it is 750 forks since 1100 is uber rare and expensive!
Took forks apart and study them so I can master on other set of forks

Junk outer bushings. That is it, I am doing full on rebuild for my other set of forks I am about to place the order and fit them with racetech springs sprung for my weight.


Keep in the mind I am still keeping it in the budget! I will list how much I have invested in it so far.

My next plan is to get updated rear shock from gsxr 1k and do coil on plug conversion smiley-shocked003

Sexy rare vortex top tree triple clamp fitted for 95-98 1100, had some difficulties getting it off the stem and forks. Few weeks later I realized that it has different offset pattern from lower yoke!! Lower yoke is 750 and somehow they managed to fit 1100 top clamp and kind of bent the stem in an angle smiley-sick015 and pinch bolts were over-torqued and broke off..



Tried to get them out with autozone bolt extractor kit with hand drill... no success because their drill bits was fucking cheap and I couldn't give enough pressure to bite into high quality bolts and returned them and got money back.

At first I was skeptical but then decided to drill them with mill at my machine shop at disposal

Broke off some expensive bits in the process because of wrong speed, but once dialed in process went really easy!



Went ahead and ordered lower 1100 yoke so I can use that sexy clamp! However it was wrong part  nothing close to 750 or 1100 offset and width so I just returned it and decided to go with 750 stock top clamp that was included with $500 package...

I put untapped vortex clamp on Egay for auction and somebody won it for $60 last Friday, however I am still waiting for him to make the payment. He is kinda being gay for not footing the bill promptly since he has 100% feedback...

Anyways enough ranting.

When I put it on the wooden stand, I didn't feel any irregularities with moving the steering head, I already ordered the bearings anyway to freshen it up. Here is what old bearings came out




I would assume wrong upper triple tree clamp is at the fault of this bearing


Took out rear suspension assembly


Cleaned it up, roller bearings were in excellent condition



Ordered a bunch of stuff for my birthday/christmas
K5-K6 GSXR1000 rear shock, front complete 99-07 hayabusa 6 pot gold calipers, steering head bearings, non o-ringed drive chain, handle grips, and 1100 gauge cluster.
92 750 fork set and gel battery was not pictured.


I had 4 pot nissin with fucked MC and nonexistent front brake hoses, I picked up complete busa for cheap, cheaper than just buying MC and hoses for my 4 pots...I did some reading and learned that 4 pots are a better performer but 6 pots will be just sufficient for me and they look sexy eventually will upgrade to braided lines though.

More packages
Racetech .95kg springs, 5W fork oil, oil seals, dust seals, inner and outer bushings, gsxr should ride very well with updated suspension!


Michelin power pilot 2ct front and power road 2 rear take offs, they should wear evenly as road 2 has more harder compound.


Picked up cbr ignition harness and k1-k3 gsxr600 coil plugs for cheap. 1.5 ohms per stick (part number #129700-4400)


I was looking for solo cowl cover, tough luck finding these..until I saw this on egay! Had to get it!

Thanks mate I would go balls out rebuild on this if I had unlimited budget but since it will be my first street bike so I want to ride it as soon as possible after I get M endorsement on my license in few weeks.

Buttoned up headers. I might would go with newer gsxr titanium headers, I need to research more which is most closest in port spacing and bend them to fit


Previous owner or before him hacked it off going to stay that way with baffles made up and inserted to reduce some noise and hopefully my stage 3 carbs will run right with it. To be honest I don't mind running straight piped because I am deaf heheh


Wired up the harness and jumped into coil on plug conversion, pulled 6 pin plug off the harness and it fits perfectly into stock coil connectors in case if I needed to go back stock coils.  I taped it with friction tape, it won't anywhere until I open it up.

Edit: I just thought of this, does the sticks need to be connected in series or parallel to make it 3 ohm for cdi to run right? I did try to fire it up and felt like it was getting weak spark.

Do COP units give better spark than stock coils? They come cheap compared to Dyna coils and I like 'em, but not worth having them if they don't give any benefit.

Actually I am being a cheapsake just for now smileychair I did use x-ring chains for my yz450f. Non o-ringed is lighter and gives less drag BUT it requires more maintenance. I will eventually pick up gold o-rings after it is done!

COPs gives stronger spark (cleaner combustion), easier starting, and cheaper to pick up working used set. In reliability viewpoint, not much different from stock coils but I hate those HT leads! They are hard to find and it is obsolete technology now.

I am going out to take off the ignition harness and bring it in the house from freezing weather... yep my whole truck is covered with ice so yeah my company is closed today will post pictures how the cops sit in the hole and wire the harness in series.

Non ringed chaind not only require lots of maintenance, but they wear out rapid fast, too. No money saved with that, I'd say.

To my experience, watercooleds are very sensitive to good plugs and strong spark, that's why I asked about the COP's. Stronger sparks would be a good idea for my 1146 engine as it will be higher CR and I'm hoping to get some power out of it, too. Was thinking of dyna coils, but like you, I hate HT leads, they mess up all the space - there's already enough stuff under the tank.

That is true, I ordered a bunch of stuff at once for my birthday/christmas so I was budgeting stuff. I should have waited out on the chains lol. At least it will be used as a spare if new o-ring chain got buggered and I still need to use the bike.

I think COPs will do great on your 1146! COPs is must to have for all engines nowadays when I learned about them few years ago, I just gotta have it for on all of my cars and bikes. Added benefit is that I am planning to go EFI in the future so it is easy to wire up it to megasquirt or something like it.

You could say that there are already enough of stuff under tank, I wish I got time and dedication to make race harness or just slim down some unnecessary long lengths.
