I've the idea in my head that I want to paint my calipers. I recently took them apart to overhaul them - a couple of the posts were really sticking, and I thought that now is the time to point them as they're apart. So I went searching on the 'net for advice and in shops and, as usual, found lots of different views - brake caliper paint, normal paint, VHT, arguments for & against primer and others for & against laquer. Another thing is whether or not to remove the podercoating. This stuff is tough to remove, but I want to prepare the surface as best as possible.
What paints would you recommend? I can't imagine that they'd get as mentally hot as the engine, so is VHT really necessary? Any advice is much appreciated. G This is what the first half of one looks like after a good brass-brushing, unfortunately it's nowhere near smooth:

If the powder coating won't come off and is intact then I'd leave it. They should be OK to paint with more or less anything. Slabby Racer 1 and 2 have both had calipers painted with gold christmas tree/decoration paint and held up well.

That would be really good news, as I'm on a budget (who isn't these days!?) and the specialist paint like the Dupli Color caliper stuff is really pricey. If I can just do a few coats of normal paint and maybe a clear coat, I'll be laughing.

I sprayed a set of mine with cheap gloss black, took lots of coats to get it looking right and lasted well.

Okay, I've cleaned them with Brake Cleaner. Even after it's evaporated, and then dried, black stuff (can't be dirt so I assume it's paint/ powder) is rubbing off - that can't be a good base for painting on.

It looks OK in the picture. Give em a rub with a rag and cleaner then paint them with a few coats. Put them in a warm oven - you might want to take the seals out - and let the paint cure. Don't go too hot. If they do get a bit shabby after a while you've only used a bit of cheapo spray paint so strip it off and have another go. That basic coating looks OK in the picture.

Thanks to the advice on this thread and my impatience to actually do something, I have gone ahead with the painting. The red and black top coats are currently drying. To be honest, I kind of butchered the job, but I have very little experience at this (did you guess? ). Next photos in a few hours. Cheers

The finished colour coats: As amateur as it gets, I know. Have to go looking for some clear coat as well before I'm through.

never seen that approach before !! You mean the dual colour? Eventually, the bike is going to be black, red & white - haven't decided on a final colour scheme yet. I didn't want to use white paint as it would show the brake dust too easily. I'm going to shave the Nissin logos back to original though Clear coating this afternoon.

Always used satin black PJ1, tbh I've painted most things with it over the years. Think it's been discontinued now cus of all the interesting ingredients

Well, that was a fucking waste of time I reassembled the calipers: Put them on the bike with the new (to me) braided lines and went to bleed them - fuckin' seals in the wrong way round (fuk knows which way). After it taking ages to get anywhere, I realised that I should check the wheels for any leaking fluid, yep. Also, fluid that spilt from the bleed nip has stripped some of the paint. Haha, what the fuck was I thinking!? I was advised to push the pots right back into the calipers to make it easy to bleed them when reassembled - I have no idea how I'm going to get them out now, especially because of the seals.
