I had the motor rebuilt by a local shop, who fitted a new stator from West country windings as the old one was toast. Fitted the motor plumbed it in, spun it for a while with the plugs out to pump oil around the motor and started it up. There is quite a loud knocking coming from behind the stator cover, I removed the stator cover and oil started streaming from somewhere. I know there is supposed to be a little oil behind there but not pouring out like that. I also found a shim in the bottom of the casing, not sure what it is though. I will have a chat to the chap who built the motor tomorrow see what he says, but to me it does seem like something he may or may not have done. Any help or advice greatly appreciated...thanks David.

Sounds like the thrust washer that sits on the end of the starter? idler? gear. Top Upper right, sits on the end of the shaft between casing- if that makes sense?. If this is an ET/EX style engine. This could be where it lives. Pics and engine would be handy as mentioned. Cheers, T

Thanks for the replies, as Timboab said it is the thrust washer on the starter idler, that's what the chap who rebuilt the motor said. Said he would pick the bike up Tuesday and sort it out, he's a top chap and really knows his stuff. I will let you Guru's know what is/was the problem. Thanks a lot for the replies, cheers David.
