Hi,
my B12-engined EFE now has original EFE clocks, and I was wondering if I could make the gear position indicator work with the B12 engine. Has anybody done this?

Not done for gear indication but did use the EFE switch on a Gixer engine for different boost levels per gear. The difficulty is finding a decent switch without wires that are too brittle!

finding a switch is no problem, my mates ESD has one which is not needed (different dashboard). I'll swap my B12 one for the ESD one. If it works for your application then it should also work for showing the gears. Guess I'll just have to try.
How about the oil temp gauge? Is there a way to fit an EFE one to the B12 engine?

Just remember the switch is switched earths not lives and you'll be good. The oil temp sender is a 1/8th NPT if memory serves me right so you could us the main gallery tap under the ign. pick-up cover - drill and tap but would probably be better for pressure gauge. May be better to mack up a riser piece to sit between the crankcase and the head cooler Y piece and tap the sender into that - at least you be measuring oil temp cooling the head!

Right. Found an EFE gear position indicator, tried it on mate's ESD and it works, all gears and neutral are showing. Then I took the gear position switch from the ESD and installed a newer one, so that it still shows neutral but not the gears anymore (aftermarket speedo). The switches are interchangeable. This means that the ESD switch also fits on an oilcooled engine, I have a powerscreen engine on the workbench, perfect for testing the gear position stuff. Connected a battery, connected the switch and indicator, and changed through the gears. But, there's always a but, the shift drum turns the other way round on an oilcooled engine. This means that the gears show as follows: Gear engaged showing 1 2 N N 2 1 3 4 5 5 4
As you can see, 3rd gear is not showing. And the others show not correctly. After closer inspection, there are 7 contacts on the switch (one for neutral and 6 for gears). And after even closer inspection, all those contacts are connected to a wire, so after some logical thinking and swapping wires around in the plug, all the gears and neutral now show correctly. Result!! Now I have the gear positions showing on the EFE clocks, with an oilcooled engine, using only standard Suzuki parts.

Strange as all of the aircooled motors only have 5 gears + neutral, likewise the oilcooled 11's and 12's. Only the oilcooled 750's had 6 + neutral! That halfway house one looks bogus as the shift drum should rotate the same between 1 - N and N - 2, 2 - 3, 3 - 4 and 4 - 5. But if it works - result!

OK, so what WERE the correct wire hookups?

I have a GSX gear position switch on my 750 and 6 gear positions is what they come with, it's slightly confusing to see the gears out of order but as CC says a quick repin and it's all good.

OK, so what WERE the correct wire hookups? switch side plug indicator side plug
green/red green brown/red yellow yellow/blue brown
white/yellow red red/blue white green/blue -
this works for my B12 engine with 1100ESD switch and EFE clocks. Colours might be different on different models.

there seems to be some confusion about the size of the switches (well I am confused anyway). The ESD and EFE switches are the same part no. and fit on B12 and 1127 engines. Could it be that Slabby 1100's and oilcooled 750's have different size switches?
As far as the rotation of the drum is concerned, that's not a problem, as long as the neutral contact is in the correct position.

The spare switch I used comes from a 1100 powerscreen
