So, all my sets of rockers are rooted (hard chrome missing in bits) - and my choices are buy new rockers at ~$50 a piece, or Hardface at ~$60 a piece. Thoughts? Non stock cams, but not big enough to need extended pads.

For what it's worth I've replied to your post on the "other oldskool forum".. Using GSX-R/GSF/GSX-F rockers instead seems like a workable option beside hardfacing.. Maybe somebody can shed some light on rocker swap?

At first the geometry is slightly wrong the adjustment screws were barely long enough to get the valve clearances right. In addition the pads are much narrower than on originals which probably doesn't increase lifetime of them and cam lobes. But yes, they fit and probably work. And possibly the geometry is better with some performance cams, maybe.

So using those rockers on a GSX head would leave less room between the ends of the rockers and the tip of the valve stems (is that what you mean?).. This would however suit the use of aftermarket hotter cams in GSX heads as these often have decreased base circles too.. There's no room in the head otherwise to house the sought after cam lobe dimensions.. Meanwhile gammaboy has pointed out the difference between older and the now available superceded rocker arms (on the other forum).. Perhaps the new part (12840-49200 -> 12840-49201?) is made to a higher standard and so possibly make the move to hard faced rockers less useful..?

It was a few years ago when I tried that so I'm not completely sure about all details But now when I think about it I'm quite sure the rocker arms were almost touching the spring retainers. So with smaller base circle the situation would be better.

I used GSXR rockers in my GSX many years ago on the advice of NCK (remember them?) along with some G4 cams. I needed the longer screws to make them work. They got trashed last year along with the cams but they probably lasted for 20 years. I think that all the messing I did with the fuel injection setup at tickover got everything really hot & they scored up very badly. I now have a set of hard faced rockers from Phil Joy Cams along with some more cams. Not fitted them yet though so I cant really comment more but they were half the price of the OE bits. Nick
