this will explain cut types . www.aperaceparts.com/transmissions.html however I cant say I have any first hand experience. am however considering this myself now , as my second gear issue would perhaps be cured . ( yep already have new cogs ,fork selectors and barrel ) seems when you reach a certain torque , the standard dogs just don't like it. will be v interested to hear about first hand up and down cut/race cut experiences also.

Yes, I've been offerd a set for $275 from the USA and as I need a gear box for the new GS1000 motor I'm going to be building it's a case of is it worth it with a motor that will be running a 1100cc kit and stage 2 cam that will be run on the streets? I've herd the race cut gear are more prone to explode if you miss a gear, but I dont know :0

Hmm.. I don't know much about GS's but the GSX1100 gearbox has many of its dogs already undercut as stock.. Maybe a "race cut" involves undercutting at a bigger angle?

275 bucks isn't a lot of dosh for a 'race cut' transmission! Its a very wide ranging phrase - in basic terms it could be a simple under cut or re-freshened under-cut through to that + revised engagement slots and ramps and 'tuning' the shift drum and forks. I've paid $1200+ for a Robinson 5 speed auto, built specifically for going fast but definitely not a street transmission! For hard road use i'd just stick with the undercut to ensure good, positive changes!

Yes, 4th and 5th are undercut as stock. On my EFE engine I got 2nd and 3rd undercut too. I didn't bother to undercut the first gear since you never shift to first at full throttle. As far as I know the main benefit of the undercut is ensuring complete dog engagement during shift. So even if the selector fork doesn't move the gear all the way to correct position the undercut will suck it in. I haven't noticed any significant cons with the undercut. Maybe it's sometimes a bit more difficult to find neutral or shift to first gear from 2nd but that's it.
