Good people
Wanting to coat my exhaust pipes with some kind of high temp black paint. What have you used or any one you know has used. I've been told the VHT stuff is crap :/

I used a can of that BBQ paint last time from the local DIY store. Was Matt black but I'd say the finish was more charcoal - apt really seeing as it was BBQ paint.....
Been on a couple of three years & had to touch up a few area's but nothing major.
What kind of finish are you thinking..

Thinking more Matt or satin finish to go with the bike. Most of the pipe work is hidden any way but what you can see is hot surface rust

I used paint stripper to get all the old paint off and used a wire brush, then washed them. After that I sanded them down all over and the few rusty spots I sanded more! I then used brake cleaner to clean the dust etc off and washed them again. Hung them up in the garden and painted them with mist costs to prime as the can said and then more mist coats once the first prime mist coat had dried. Painted them over the weekend whilst the weather was nice and sunny!

I tried BBQ paint on my first try and it cooked off in one season (and smelled TOTALLY toxic the whole time). Second try was with the VHT stuff and it took two seasons to cook off... I'm pretty sure the problem with the VHT was that I put it on WAY too thick. I went much lighter on the mid-pipe and it's still on there. By the time I add the cost and time and damage to the headers together... ceramic coating on the next set of headers for me.

+1 on Nostol's reply. Ceramic coating is surprisingly not that expensive and will look much better and be more durable. I think it might help with heat dissipation too?? I was quoted a price of around 70 bucks to do my 4 into 1 exhaust.
