There has being some very interesting reading on here regarding K&N air filters, I was just wondering what the actual verdict is in the end which ones are the better types.

I did not explain that very well, its custom built carbon airbox that I built with flat panel K&N but after what being posted considering changing the filter.

duplex - the doubles- seem to be best for best performance, but hell of a job to get finetuned they are more voulnrable for wheaterchanges (tune @ one temperature is not the same) as in some places the temperature may flunctuate. i've had em but eventually took em off and put them in a goodies bag airbox is not needed for these "duplex" filters. there are also the singles but i cannot give you info about performance on those since i haven't read much opinions about these systems. personally for road use, i use the oem replacement from knn on the other hand even my exhaust is oem

The race team linked to where I worked used a huge PiperCross coarse foam filter in it's airbox, it was a special designed thing sitting in the top half of the a.box. This was on the GSXR1000 racers, with pressurised feeds, which I think you have too John. The filter was there too stop grit and larger bits of dust entering the engine, being a race engine, they were stripped regularly and freshened up - no need to do 1000's of miles. I know you're an able guy J1B, so know to just make your filter have the largest surface area you can fit in your special carbon a.box. The corrugated K and N type filters flow well when pretty dry, but getting a large flat section of this may be tricky, there are several other manufacturers who use a similar design, one might be able to supply something for you. Some of the race shops can supply race supplies and could help. Pipercross do a high flow 'race' filter which needs cleaning every 2000 miles(had one on my GSXR1000K6), you have to alter the mixture for these, as they're not a direct replacement, they might supply some to your requirements. My drop in Pipercross filter works better than the K and N because the design seems better and it's larger - certainly had to go up a few sizes on the mains and fit different needles. Fast bikes (not my normal read) magazine tested some square sections of filter material May edition, it showed that some thin, single layer fibre filters by Sprint Filters offered the least resistance, so potentially the most power - but design plays a part too, because if pure flow of the material were the only criteria, my Pipercross filter should be worse than the K and N, but the reverse was true - flow rate of the filter isn't an issue now - I've got 155 m. jets, which is the same as dual pods (I bought a stage 3 kit from Factory Pro), this gives the cleanest, strongest top end, so must be right. Perhaps a section of Sprint Filter's material might be best for you J1B ?

Oily, Thank you for reply, very informative and interesting read indeed. Makes good sense indeed, I do find K&N does quickly get dirty. I will look into both see what can work out.

Not very good customer service there . . . . makes you wonder if they get someone else to make their filters ? Maybe Pipercross might be more helpful, they certainly make their own stuff and the race only filter media might be a good option.

Well pipercross cannot supply anything either. There nearest size not big enough, they were helpful to this point, then basically said cant help and not replied even thou asked couple times for material to make my own. Back to your comment oily are they all made in China or somewhere. Back to using K@N. This has being working well on my set up just have to clean it all dam time.

That's a bit disappointing J1B - it does seem these companies get the filter media made in China !! maybe even fully made there, after the research has been done. Even Disney get loads of their wares made in China, as my children found out from our recent trip to Florida, a bit of a let down finding the merchandise wasn't even made in the U.S. ! I always found that my own modern, sealed airbox GSXR 1000s lost some response and probably top end after 2000 road miles - ram air systems really do channel loads of flies into the a.box. Oily

We've got some really clever people over here who design all sorts, but as you say 1168 T, we manufacture so little here these days, just design stuff or sell 'boxes', not much in between ! - if you could find the Chinese factory that makes the filter media they'd probably sell you enough to cover your bed for a couple of quid - damn annoying . . . RamAir filters would be the same I suppose J1B ?
