Was given an 1100 et last weekend - or what's left of it . ( been in someone's.garden shed for 15 years . Would have been ok but shed has leaking roof !!! Engine seems pretty good - except starting from starter motor . First off the starter gear just span without engaging. So cover off and checked starter clutch . Nut was a little loose on the end of crank !! The rotor won't seem to tighten onto crank properly , without locking the starter gear completly . Almost as though the taper on crank is worn and stator is going on to far .therefore pinching up onto starter gear . Anyone ever experienced this ? And if so - any cure ? (Starter clutch rollers and springs are good ) Any help would be great . Cheers

There are different size tapers dependent on model, just thinking that maybe the stator is off a different model ( katana 1000 seems to ring a bell as being different and also 1150 stators too ! )

Seems it is the correct rotor , after a bit of research . I wonder whether at some point it has spun loose and stayed loose for a few miles - could cause worn taper perhaps Any other ideas anyone ?

I hate to state the obvious, but maybe then replacement crank, see if Grumpys has anything or e-bay. They are about, seem to remember seeing one on e-bay the other day reasonably priced.

..I wonder whether at some point it has spun loose and stayed loose for a few miles - could cause worn taper perhaps .. Well..? Is the taper worn? Take the assembly off the crank to inspect it for wear an/or broken parts.. The allen bolts my have snapped or the steel sheet that covers the starter clutch may have deformed and is now pinching the starter gear.. But I'm only guessing, so better investigate..

allen bolts all good along with rollers, springs, pins, plate face. the taper does feel a little rough along with the crank end. am thinking some loctite 606 to bring back both surfaces perhaps.

found the culprit - one raised part about 3mm across and what looks to be approx. half a mm pronounced . some slight scratch marks on starter gear face that correspond managed to spot it by sitting plate face onto a sheet of glass with a little dye. I little delicate hammer work and some wet and dry should iron out the little bugger !

Also get some cutting compound and lap the rotor onto the crank, remove residue with carb cleaner then put it back on. Always worked a treat for me. Cheers SRR
