Hey oss I remembered when I had my Suzuki savage, that there were some talk about you shouldn't use modern oils in it.. The savage had an old school valve system with what's known as quote: "an antique flat tappet split rocker system", which required an oil which had much higher levels of zink and other stuff than what modern oils have today. This is also known in the old car world, with old fords and porsche and others.. Using modern oils didn't mean instant damage, but would have an effect on the engine wear over a long period.. There was this guide for savage owners to use, on how to know what to look for, and what kind of zddp aditives you could use.. I remember I just bought the top of the line oil which had more than enough of these components, and it was the Redline motorcycle oils.. Now since most of us doesn't ride bikes newer than probably 98, bandits and older models, I was wondeing if such oil was recomended for the bikes we ride..? Now i don't know if this is only a case with the savage engine, and old 65 ford engines etc.. Maybe even the 80's 16 valve suzuki engines is "modern enough" to use the modern oils that's used today..? Here's a link to the oil guide page from the suzuki savage forum: suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1344471565

Hmmm.. A lot of bikes use that sort of valve operation design, and hardly anyone felt the need to use a different type of oil because of that.. Just use the best motorcycle oil that suits your budget and choose the weight according to what it says in the service manual.. The motorcycle world is filled with BS stories about oil..

Old fords with flat tappets suffer horrendously with lack of zink in oil. Most damage on bikes occurs on start up with long periods of in activety, especially with cams as last place to receive oil.
