I have done it both ways & for me it really does depend on what sort of bike I want to build
For example if I was building something with a slingshot frame, engine, tank etc it makes more sense to buy a running bike as you get all the ancillaries you need, but if I was building a GS with an oil cooled engine & modern running gear there seems little point in buying a complete bike & trying to sell off all the bits you don't need, if money is tight you nearly always lose out that way as you take what you can get

You're too kind.. lol. Paint works not my cup of tea but each to their own. If we didn't have our own tastes everything would be the same. Yep, the cammo paint is an aquired taste but looked far better in the flesh, it certainly turned heads and fitted in well with the aggressive looking chops my mates were riding at the time..... and not a pro-painter in sight, it was all done with stencils and rattle-cans too. Just trying to show that things *can* be achieved for not a lot of money. It seems the build-standard bar is set waaaaay higher than it used to be, back then it was a struggle to afford a new exhaust for yer bike but now that kind of purchase really seems like nothing.

Building on a budget. I totally get that. But if you've got the cash to spare then why not chuck it at the bike. I probably would if I could.
How long did it take to do the camo paint job?

It's like I said earlier fella, I think we would all like to get the very best of everything, stick it in blender and watch a gorgeous bike pop out the other end. I'm outta work so that's nuthin' but a dream How long did it take to do the camo paint job? Hahaha, too bloody long!... nah, about a couple of weeks on and off. The stencils were made from cereal box cardboard of all things. I got some seriously funny looks when I was at B&Q holding tins of 'carplan' paint against my combat jacket to check for the best colour matches

I bought my bike, a 93 gsxr750 for the princely sum of £330 four years ago and in the time I've owned it I reckon I've only spent around £300 on parts etc so working to a budget is doable if time isn't an issue

Times not an issue. It just shows that if you keep your eyes open you can sometimes bag a bargain. I'm still not sure on what road I'd take yet.
If you build a bike from an already registered frame Is it just a case of getting the log book updated with the new motor and getting 12 months ticket? Or is there more to it then that? Although I've heard that the dvla can be a bit funny now about updating motors on log books.

I think if you can prove all numbers are correct and you have reciepts etc then there shouldn't be an issue but getting a custom frame means getting a special kind of test done I believe
