Hi again,
My mate bought APE clutch plates with heavy duty springs for his GSX 1100 engine and when putting it together he tried to tighten the 6 bolts. The springs are so heavy, that the original bolts broke immediately before he could tighten them. He replaced them with new 8.8 bolts. Just gone a few miles since then, bolts are still okay. I've just ordered the same APE kit for the same GS110X engine and just wanna know if the 8.8 bolts would be fine or not.
My mate also has some problems with the new APE plates, when pulling the clutch lever it doesn't open enough and can't even shift. He preloaded the clutch cable as neccessary but at half throttle it starts to slip. Is it possible that the new plates are so good, that they need to be "raped" a little bit to be able to slip enough for shifting when lever pulled?
Thanks for any suggestions
Chisse

ifind that standard plates work best but i would try your old springs back in it first job see what happens mate but im no expert I have 1168 Wiseco pistons with Dyna 2000 ignition and Dynojet kit and after restoration just ridden about 5-6000 km when a good standard set started to slip using heavy duty springs. You know, it goes like hell :-) My mate has GSX-R barrels and head (1198 cc) with 40 mm carbs and Dyna 2000. The APE kit has one more plate, that means it's 14% stronger. We both need them...

sounds the same as the old Vance & Hines Clutch kits .."plates are thiner" to get the extra plate in....... if yoy do away with the wave washer and machine the lip of the clutch hub you can do the same with OEM plates.... On My lazy draw thru "160 Bhp at 5PSI" i run stock plates with just 3 springs and a lock-up......"no slippy slippy" and lite a a feather..

That's interesting :-) We always thought lock-up is neccessary only at very high BHP... Cheers The stock clutch on a GSX tends to struggle after 140BHP....and all the stonger spring fixes leave a very heavy lever to pull.... so the lock up was the easy answer...."TBH it will slip a little at low speed sometimes with only 3 springs" but on the whole it works for me..... i,m interested in your mates bike with the GSX-R barrels and head (1198 cc) got any photos or more info....??

His engine is a clone, engine-Nr. starting with U702, it has GS 1150 crank with 18 mm pins (if I remember) to fit GSX-R pistons. He bought the barrells and pistons from a Hungarian drag-racer, I think it has 79 mm pistons. The head is original, with 40 mm carbs. All he had to do is to plug the oil lines going to the head and install a top end oiler kit connected to the place of the oil pressure switch. He has low compression (around 9.5:1) because of the lower pistons, so he could now run turbo :-)
Sorry, no photo yet...
Cheers
