Started my bike up today for the first time in a couple of weeks and got it up to temperature and I thought all was ok (apart from needing to balance the carbs again) but noticed that number 4 exhaust header was a lot cooler than the rest...I know it runs fine although I need to up the main jets but otherwise fine and it starts on the button fine so.....
any ideas???

Carbs, valve clearance, spark plugs, air filter. All above have to be in a good nick for a similar reading among cylinders.
A temperature gauge is a nice toy. Oil consuption will also affect a reading

Oil consuption will also affect a reading carbs have been ultrasonically cleaned twice, new spark plugs...runs k&n pod filters with 2.5 turns of mixture screws...maybe they could do with a clean...valve clearance is what I'm hoping its not as it was running fine before:-/

A same amount of mixture through all cylinders + a good burn equals a same temperature through the headers.
Carbon built or a valve that leaks will give you a lower reading, as a rich mixture will also do.
A lean mixture has a higher reading. A difference of +_ 10 degrees C, wouldnt be a problem, more it will. Ofcourse spitting on the headers or feel them how warm with a hand are will only be noticeable by a significant difference

Also a compresion leak will give you a lower reading

Also a compresion leak will give you a lower reading its a noticeable difference, put it this way...I can put my hand on number four header and hold it there for a few seconds but the rest I cannot touch at all:-/

Managed to get the valve cover off today by lowering the engine slightly...checked the valve clearances and all were fine but no4 exhaust valves were a little tight so adjusted them...fingers crossed that will help...will get the carbs balanced soon then hopefully that will be it:-)

Good news mate, glad ya didn't have to drop it out after all. Sounds like the clearances on these oil cooled motors don't take too kindly to being either side of perfect?

I set them always in the middle. Also when between spec, once a year, so I know that its cleared
