i recently bought a gs1000e from an ebay seller on the understanding that it was running , moted etc as i wanted a bike i could use this year , when it arrived it was clear that i couldnt get out and use it straight away ! the bikes looks good but it runs terribly ! when starting from cold i give it full choke and it starts without much trouble but it wont respond to any throttle for the first couple of minutes , once warmed up a little its still very unwilling to respond to throttle but it does pick up sluggishly if you keep it above 3-4000 rpm , it also back fires quite a bit when you throttle off and as it gets hotter it seems to go onto 3 cylinders ? the previous owner told me a week before i bought it he had the carbs ultra sonicly cleaned and set to factory settings and that it was running well afterwards , i really cant see that being true but anyway i need to try and get it running properly , as ive mostly always worked on 2 strokes i was hopeing you guys could give me some pointers , i suspect carburation but i guess it could be ignition problems as well ? i recently fitted carb repair kits on my gt750 which made a huge difference to the running of it , is it worth trying on the gs or is that for once i have it running a bit better than it it just now ? thanks Andy

Check valve clearance ! Also check if the intake studs and diaphragms are tight .
Is the ignition already a CDI ? Otherwise you can replace it ...
Good luck !

ok thanks for that , i forgot to mention it has k + n filters and a cut down motad exhaust , could the cut down exhaust cause problems ? a mate of mine has a harris pipe that im going to fit , i think they look much better than the motad but in this case could it improve the running ? regards Andy

did he get the carbs cleaned cos they were clogged with crud? if so did he also have the tank cleaned out? if the tank has rust in it then it may well have just washed down into the carbs and clogged them up again. of course, its always worth checking plugs timing etc first cos that costs nothing. motad exhaust and filters will mean it requires setting up right, but they wouldnt give the problems that you list, it would just run lean and get hot when you pasted it assuming all the electrics and ignition are ok, its going to need the carbs off again. lets face it, he told you it ran fine and it didnt, so what makes you think he has actually had the carbs cleaned ?

thanks john , funny you should mention the tank , the previous owner told me the tank had been sealed but when i checked it looks like a shrivelled up polythene bag , its lifting and will definately need to be removed and re-done , i wonder if a piece of this crap could be blocking the fuel tap ? would fuel starvation give the issuses ive mentioned ? anyone got any recommendations for getting the old liner removed and good new kit installed ? cheers Andy

I spoke to them about the same thing, they said they do the stuff that removes the old liner then have an ethanol proof lining to replace it. Its not a cheap process but worth it long term.

Fit like loon ;-p
Remember spark plugs. I fitted new set, ran nice, started missing, couldn't be the new spark plugs, could it?
It's said here are fake plugs around, mine looked real, came from 'that site'
