Hey everybody. I recently bought a new project bike at a pretty cheap price. It was not running when I bought it, but I was ok with that because I mostly wanted a project. I don't have any real history on the bike because the previous owner had passed away and the wife sold it to me. The craigslist add said 'rebuilt engine', but I don't really believe that because the sparks plugs were super worn, so I doubt someone rebuilt it and didn't change the spark plugs.
Ok. First we tried to start it with starting fluid and it still wouldn't start. After trailering it home, we plugged in the battery and tried again. It started but sounded really bad. first thing I did was check the gas. The gas in one of the carbs float chamber seemed pretty clean, as did the gas from the petcock.
Then I completely charged the battery, and tested it with a multi meter. The meter read 12.5 with the lights on. While craking it barely dropped into the 9s. So I think the battery is fine. If I missed something or missread a symptom, let me know, as I am a newb. Bike is not starting at all at this point.
Next thing I did was check the spark plugs, they were pretty black, but also very worn. I was excited thinking it just needed new plugs, but when I put them in, it wasn't any better, still wouldn't start. So I tried the starter fluid again and it did start, but still sounded bad. I included a video below.
Here is a pic of one of the plugs, they all look the same.
I took the plugs off and they weren't wet, so the bike is not flooded.
I took off the panel on the engine to check timing, but because it has electronic ignition, I didn't know what to check. Is there anything to check if the bike doesn't have points?
That is where I am right now. My plan is to remove and clean the carbs, then if that doesn't work I will attempt to check the valves.
Oh yeah, when the bike is running, giving it gas doesn't really do anything thing, it revs very little.
Here is the video of it running, I know it sounds bad. Let me know what you think.
