I am racing in the 11.1 class of straightliners on a Yamaha TRX850, its over a second off the pace, it only has 79bhp so its well short of the power needed to run competitive times in my class. So I need a faster street based bike to run in my class. I have been without a Suzuki since I sold my Katana a couple of years ago, and my gsxr750h before Christmas. So I have gone for what I know will do the job, a mk1 bandit 1200. Here is the bike, I bought it yesterday, its standard ish, apart from a stainless system with scorpion can, a different headlight and a gsxr1100m front end. The plan is to run it till the end of this year as it is, in the 11.1 class, then funds allowing, tune it, stretch it, lower it etc to move up a class or 2. First job, the bike is fitted with a 33bhp restrictor kit. A nice easy job to sort out, tank off, carbs off, and prise the little washer things from the inlets on the engine. The bike minus the tank and seat. The offending items that have been stealing my power Next job, the bike has a K&N panel filter, which looked filthy, so I took it out ready for blast with my airline I noticed the airbox had a load of black tape over it, so I took it off, and found badly cut hole, I remembered I had an air box lid from my last 1200 bandit, so I fitted my old one. The rear infill panel has a hole for a LED, apart from there is no LED so it looks awfull, I found a black infill panel off my old bandit and used that instead. There is some sort of strange rubbery thing over the back of the seat, not sure what its for, it could be a grippy pillion cover or it could be a something else, either way its now removed. Thats it for the moment, I will add more pics and info as I go on with it

I've seen a few 600 bandits with the 33 bhp kit, but never a 1200. It rode better than I expected with the kit on, was expecting it to be terrible but it was ok. Straight back into the garage, and next job was to remove these blue bars, they didn't look right on a green bike. Also I have removed these heated grips, might be good for winter, but I don't need them on the drag strip there are too many wires cluttering up the bike. I got a pair of new oxford sportbike/racebike grips, not the nicest looking grips but they have a nice feel to them. I had some proper Renthal street bars in black, so I fitted them, looks loads better now Back in one piece again, but not sure about this small front light, although it will be nice and light to keep the weight down.

I got it cheapish, but I knew the bike had the kit fitted, it even came with an offical certificate to show the police or insurance

The bandit had an advisory for slight play in the rear wheel bearings, so I ordered a pair, then thought if I am doing the rears I should do the fronts too. The person I bought them off threw in a sprocket bearing for free as I had bought both sets. Very happy with that. A nice easy job to do. I will probs have to do them again when I get the wheels powder coated, as I always damage the bearings during removal.

Bank holiday Monday I took the bike to SantaPod for round 3 of straightliners, 1st run down the strip and the clutch went, as soon as I got on full throttle above half way up the revs it just slipped and revved out. I started stripping the clutch and found it was very difficult to get the main nut off, I tried putting the bike in first and locking the rear wheel but it wasn't working. I got a long piece of box section, drilled 2 holes in it, and went through my collection of exhaust clamps and found one the same size as the gap on the outer clutch section. This tool worked great and the nut came undone. 1 empty basket The clutch now out of the bike ready for inspection. I was very lucky, the heads on all 3 diaphragm screws were really chewed up, I put the correct size screwdriver in place and tapped it with a hammer, this was enough to get some grip and all 3 came out. Thats it for the moment, next up is to inspect the fibre plates and the steel plates.

Hello Sam, nice to see you in here. Anyways, I measured all the fibre plates with a micrometer and they were withing the tolerances in the manual. The steels looked a bit blue though. At this point I thought, its time to buy a new clutch, but with going drag racing I was a bit worried as the bandit diaphragm clutches are not the strongest things in the world. So I started thinking about maybe getting a lock up clutch.

TBH those steels will clean up with a vapour blast..or just a good scrub with scotch -brite but what ever you do to a blandit clutch it will still have the weaker banded basket......Personaly i would do a gixer coil spring conversion....1st then if it still casued problems stick a lock up on that......but TBH.....a stock B12 has a job to pump out more than 130 beans..............."ducks and waits for the back lash".... but oil boiler clutchs do suffer from heat with run after run on the strip....leaning the bike to the right for a few seconds after every run...helps keep them nice and wet.......and a cable tie around the grip that will hold the lever in between runs ..also helps.......

Cheers for the info duck. I did buy a lockup, turns out Roger Upperton is 15 mins from me, so I had a drive across to get a lock up as he had one in stock.

The lock up went in ok, and I fired the bike up and heard a very loud clattering. I thought the lock up arms were hitting the casing but after asking on OSS, a few people thought that maybe I had damaged a gear when putting it in. Lock up in place. Followed by the spacer. The OSS crew were right, I had ripped 3 teeth off the alternator drive gear. 3 teeth missing. I found 2 teeth straight away, but could not find the last one. I took the sump off and poked around with a stick with a magnet on, I heard a ping sound and the last tooth was there. This made me very happy. Big thanks to Troy for helping me out with a spare clutch and gear. A more carefull assembly and this time it all worked great. I took the bike out for a spin on the road and it felt fine, no clutch slip and this was using the clutch that had been slipping. The bike was then ran at Elvington and I got into the 11.1 class finals

How did you damage the alternator drive? By tightening the lockup bolts?
If i knew they could get a bandit 1200 to 33 bhp.... ah well its too late now,
Nice build!

How did you damage the alternator drive? By tightening the lockup bolts? If i knew they could get a bandit 1200 to 33 bhp.... ah well its too late now, Nice build! When I pulled the clutch plates out for inspection, the basket moved outwards a tiny bit, I pushed it back and the teeth ripped off when I tightened up the big centre clutch nut. The teeth must have not been meshed properly. When I rang around some bike breakers looking for a gear, not one breaker had one in. They all said its a really common thing to happen when fitting clutches. It was an expensive lesson but I know what I am doing and I know to check the 2 sets of teeth are flush before fitting the main nut.
